Intro Tech Drawing

The document discusses the differences between sketches and technical drawings, noting that sketches are quick, rough drawings to convey ideas while technical drawings are more precise depictions used by engineers. It explains that technical drawings can be either pictorial drawings that show the object in 3D, such as isometric drawings, or orthographic drawings that show the object with 2D side views of the front, top, and right side. The document provides guidance on how to create orthographic drawings by establishing the front view and positioning the other side views at right angles.

sketching?
Why are sketches useful?

a) Provide a means of easily

expressing an idea.
b) May be an initial step in planning
an orthographic drawing.
c) Provide a quick and simple way of
sharing an idea
From Sketches to Technical
Drawings
A technical drawing is a 2D or 3D depiction of a concept or idea of a
physical object.

Technical drawings are used to document measurements from the

field before they are produced as solid models on the computer.

CAD Drafters Design Engineers
Electrical and electronics drafters
So what are the two types of
Technical Drawings?

…And now it’s your turn to…
Technical drawings are great for engineers to explain ideas and
communicate what the final part will look like to the customer. Unfortunately,
isometric drawings have some disadvantages. Many times, for parts to be
accurately depicted, you need straight on views of each surface (90°).

What’s the deal with Orthographic
Drawings?

Front is always drawn first!
How do I find the front of an object?
Characteristics of finding the

- Longest dimensions
- Shows the most detail
- Fewest hidden lines
- Most natural position
