What is SOP?
A standard operating procedure (SOP) is a set of step-
by-step instructions compiled by an organization to
help workers carry out complex routine operations.
The Aim of SOP
 SOPs aim to achieve efficiency, quality output and
uniformity of performance, while reducing
miscommunication and failure to comply with industry
regulations.
 Documentation that states the reason for the standard
operating procedure is an essential element. This
documentation should define the SOP's purpose, what it
explains, whom it applies to and whom it excludes. For
example, if you are writing a standard operating procedure
for your human resources department, identify that it
applies to HR employees but excludes personnel from
other departments who have separate standard operating
procedures to abide by.
Procedures Identified

List each step in the task sequentially. Be as brief as

possible, while giving pertinent information so the
employee can comprehend all phases of the task.
Subgroups may be required for stages that require
multiple processes. Emphasize difficult areas that
commonly cause glitches or confusion. You may also
need to write contingency steps to address predictable
problems that could arise -- for example, “If this
happens, do this.” Add pictures or screenshots
throughout so employees can have visual verification
of stages.
