Constants, Variables and

Algebraic Expressions
At the end of the lesson, you should be
able to:
1. Differentiate between constants and
variables in a given algebraic
expression;
2. Evaluate algebraic expressions for
given values of the variables.
 Algebra comes from the Arabic word,
al-jabr (which means restoration), which in
turn was part of the title of a mathematical
book written around the 820 AD by Arab
mathematician, Muhammad ibn Musa al-
Khwarizmi.
 constant – a constant is a number on its
own. For example, 1 or 127;
 variable – a variable is a symbol, usually
letters, which represent a value or a number.
For example, a or x. In truth, you have been
dealing with variables since pre-school in
the form of squares ( ), blank lines (___) or
other symbols used to represent the
unknowns in some mathematical sentences
or phrases;
 term – a term is a constant or a variable or
constants and variables multiplied together. For
example, 4, xy or 8yz. The term’s number part
is called the numerical coefficient while the
variable or variables is/are called the literal
coefficient/s. For the term 8yz, the numerical
coefficient is 8 and the literal coefficients are yz;
 expression – an Algebraic expression is a group
of terms separated by the plus or minus sign.
For example, x – 2 or 4x + ½y – 45.
How do you understand the following symbols
and expressions?
SYMBOLS / EXPRESSIONS MEANING

symbol that stands for any

1) x value or number.

2) 2 + 3 the sum of 2 and 3.

a symbol for the relation
3) = between the expressions on
its left and right sides.
Problem:
 Which of the following is/are equal to 5?

a. 2 + 3
b. 6 – 1
c. 10/2
d. 1+4
e. all of these
Problem:
 Let x be any real number. Find the
value of the expression 3x (the
product of 3 and x) if
a. x = 5
b. x = 1/2
c. x = -0.25
Problem:
 Recall the formula for finding the
perimeter of a rectangle, P = 2L + 2W.
This means you take the sum of twice
the length and twice the width of the
rectangle to get the perimeter.
Suppose the length of a rectangle is
6.2 cm and the width is 1/8 cm. What is
the perimeter?
