Thin Walled Structures

This document discusses design parameters for automotive bumper beams to reduce weight in low-speed frontal crashes, including studying the effects of material type, thickness, shape, and impact conditions. The use of composites and high-strength metals, as well as thinner materials, can reduce bumper weight while still meeting impact specifications. Various parameters were tested, including how material selection, thickness, shape, and test conditions influence the impact behavior and strength of the bumper beam.

THIN WALLED STRUCTURES

Design and analysis of an automotive bumper beam in low speed frontal

crashes:
 In this paper, the most important parameters including
material, thickness, shape and impact condition are studied.
 Bumper weight can be reduced by use of composite and high strength
mettalic sheet and thinner thickness material.
 Four main strategic parameters were studied during the test modelling in the
first test for metallic material.
 Firstly, the material,i.e,how the type of materials can impact the material
specifications and what type of materials can be used as replacement in order
to reduce the part weights
 Secondly, the thickness i.e, how the bumpers beam thickness Can affect the
impact specification.
 Thirdly, the shape,i.e, How even the small manufacturers can result in easier
manufacturing processes and lowering the impact strength.
 Finally, the impact condition, how test conditions other than the previously
mentioned parameters which can affect the impact behaviour.
