MCCB

MCCB and SDF are circuit protection devices. [1] MCCBs are molded case circuit breakers that provide compact circuit protection for distribution and motor feeders in extreme tropical conditions with minimal maintenance. [2] They provide overload, short circuit, and optional earth fault protection. [3] MCCBs come in conventional and current-limiting types and can be equipped with internal and external accessories for remote tripping, signaling, and control purposes.

MCCB
(Moulded Case
Circuit Breaker)
Introduction
 MCCB is a compact type of ACB basically
enclosed in moulded (insulating) case.
 Factory reset , no maintenance can be
done.
 Can also replace SDF in a distribution or
motor feeder
 Specially designed for extreme tropical
conditions.
 Promises reliable performance at high
ambient and humid environment
3
Why MCCB ?
 Practically no maintenance is
required
 Reduced downtime and simplicity of
operation
 No recurring cost and no stock of
fuse is required hence reducing cost
of inventory
 Gives separate indication in case it
trips on fault (centre position)
4
Protections in MCCB
 Overload Protection
 Short Circuit Protection
Optional (Externally available)
 Earth Fault Protection
Types of MCCB
1. Conventional Type MCCB
Total Operating Time- 15 to 20 mSec

2. Current Limiting Type MCCB

Total Operating Time- 10 to 12 mSec

Accessories for MCCB
Internal-
 Shunt Release – Provides remote tripping
 Under voltage Release : Operating voltages-
Pick Up voltage - 85% to 110% of rated coil voltage
Drop off voltage- 35% to 65% of rated coil voltage
 Auxiliary contact block- Used for remote signaling and control purposes
 Trip Alarm Contact- Gives tripping indication when MCCB trips
NOTE- MCCB allows only two internal accessories at a time

7
External -
 Adaptor Terminal with Shroud/Spreader Links with Barriers (Shrouds) :
Provides termination of higher size of cables/links(Al Conductor)
 Rotary Operating Mechanism : Facilitates easy operation , Door interlock
mechanism and Door Interlock defeat facility
 External Earth Fault Module : Protection against earth faults
 Electrical Operating Mechanism (EOM) : Operate the MCCB from any remote
location like an ACB
 Mechanical Interlocking Kit : Two MCCB can be interlocked using base plate,
in side by side configuration
 Mechanical Interlocking Using key Locks- Interlocking through extended
rotary operating mechanism.

MCCB with Microprocessor
Based Release
Provides-
 Long time (Overload) Protection with thermal inbuilt
memory
 Short time(Short circuit protection) with time delay .
 Instantaneous(Short circuit protection)
 Ground Fault Protection
NOTE- MCCB is categorized as type “B” , these breakers have
Icw rating, but for limited time period which is less as
compared to ACB. 9
Applications of MCCB
 Distribution Feeders
 Transformers
 DG Sets
 APFC Systems
 DC Loads
 UPS
 Motors

CO-ORDINATION OF FUSE WITH STARTER
Standards like IEC: 60947-4-1 and IS/IEC:
60947-4-1 specify motor protection
requirements for selection of switching &
protection device for motor feeders.

Type “1” co-ordination requires that under short-circuit

conditions, the contactor or the starter shall cause no danger
to persons or installation. The motor feeder may not be
suitable for further service without repair and replacement of
parts.

Type “2” co-ordination requires that under short-circuit

conditions, the contactor or the starter shall cause no
danger to persons or installation and shall be suitable for
further use.
