Delineation and Design of Canal and Canal Structures
The document discusses the delineation and design of canal and canal structures for irrigation systems. An irrigation system should regulate variable water supply to match crop water demand and operate efficiently. The design process considers crop water needs, soil types, climate conditions, and incorporates practical limitations to provide flexibility. Key parameters in canal capacity estimation include water requirements, conveyance efficiency, canal cross section, and hydraulic design. Area delineation involves laying out the canal system on a topographic map to benefit the maximum irrigable area cost-effectively.

Canal and Canal Structures
OVERVIEW
The purpose of an irrigation system is to regulate the variable supply of water
from the river, to whatever possible, by constructing storage reservoir or diversion dam as the case maybe, convey it to the fields and deliver it as equitably as possible, matching the supply closely to the crop water demand in all the stages of crop growth. It should make optimum use of the available water supply. It should operate at high level of efficiency not only during peak water demands but also during low water demands. The design of a canal system begins with an understanding of crop water demand in all stages of its growth. Ideally, a canal system must convey the right amount of water at the right time. But varying conditions of climate, soil type, precipitation and crops grown would make our design task next to impossible. So practical limitations are incorporated to provide flexibility of the canal system. Estimation of canal capacity leads us to the determination of the following parameters; a. Water requirement at the field b. Efficiency of the conveyance system c. Canal cross section d. Hydraulic design AREA DELINEATION
It is the layout of a canal system/or the paper location of canals delineated on
a topographic map of the proposed irrigation project, by considering a good canal layout should benefit the maximum area at a reasonable cost. Situations may arise wherein one portion of the irrigable area within a system may not have enough water and another maybe over irrigated, wasting a considerable amount of water, if the distribution canals are either inadequate or not properly laid out. .
