DEFINITION
• Interprofessional relationship/collaboration is the process of
developing and maintaining effective interprofessional working
relationships with learners, practitioners, clients, families and
communities to enable optimal outcome.
Successful Teamwork
• Open communication
• Clear direction
• Clear and known roles and tasks for team members
• Respectful atmosphere
• Shared responsibility
• Appropriate balance of member participation for the task at hand
• Acknowledgement and processing of conflict
• Clear and known decision making procedures
• Regular and routine communication and information sharing
Common Barriers
• Personal values and expectations
• Personality differences
• Culture and ethnicity
• Gender
• Historical interprofessional and intraprofessional rivalries
• Differences in requirements, regulations and norms of professional
education
Respect
• In order to achieve successful collaboration, one must understand and
embrace the different roles of each professional towards client’s interest.
This shows respect for one another and the ability to set aside egos.

Communication
• It is vital to create a safety culture for the client. This will help and
provide the client to make well-informed decisions regarding to their
objectives and interests. It is important to recognize that
communication is not only verbal exchanges, but is also affected by
tone, body language, and attitude.

• How?
• Be prepared before consultations
• Recognize the importance of other professionals (time management)
• Respond in a timely manner to requests
• Often evaluate your interactions to improve your skills
Delegation
• It is important to be able to delegate tasks to fellow colleagues and to
accept delegations from other.

• How?
• Giving; ensure the readiness and competence of the one receiving
• Receiving; ensure you are competent and ready
Difference of Opinions
• Each professional has their own experiences and knowledge which
can result in a difference of opinion, but all members have the same
goal – to provide the best outcome for the client. Even with
differences, professionals must be able to work together to determine
the best process and plan.

• Appreciate the differences
• Remain respectful by listening and communicating
• Use it as an opportunity for education
