Negative sequence reactance arises due to current imbalances in a three-phase system caused by electrical faults or imbalanced loads. The negative sequence current vector rotates in the same direction as the rotor, but its magnetic flux rotates in the reverse direction of the rotor. This causes the rotor to cut through the flux at twice the synchronous speed, inducing double frequency currents in the rotor that can be harmful. Negative sequence reactance is typically 70-95% of the subtransient reactance and can be approximated by it. A negative sequence relay is connected in alternators to protect against negative sequence faults by tripping the alternator if they occur.

 POSITIVESEQUENCE IMPEDANCE
 NEGATIVE SEQUENCE IMPEDANCE
 ZERO SEQUENCE IMPEDANCE
In alternator value of resistance is
negligible as compared to reactance.
Hence sequence impedance and
sequence reactance both are same.
 In a perfectly balanced 3 Phase system, no
negative phase sequence currents would
exist.
 However, in practice it is impossible to
achieve this perfectly balanced system all
time. So these negative phase currents need
to be considered.
 Line voltage imbalances caused by electrical
faults or imbalanced loads lead to current
imbalances in each conductor.
 In a rotating machine, the negative
sequence current vector rotates in the
same direction as the rotor.
 It is the magnetic flux produced by the
negative sequence current that rotates in
the reverse direction of the rotor.
 Thus, the rotor cuts through the flux at
twice the synchronous speed, and the
induced current in the rotor is twice the
line frequency.
 Positive and negative sequence
impedances cannot be equal.
 In case of synchronous machine, -ve
sequence currents creates a rotating
mmf in opposite direction to the rotor
mmf. Double frequency emf and
currents induced in rotor.
 -ve sequence impedance is 70-95 % of
subtransient reactance. It can be
approximated by subtransient
reactance.
 It
is the ratio of the
fundamental component of
armature voltage, due to the
fundamental positive sequence
component of armature
current, to this component of
armature current at rated
frequency.
 It
is the ratio of fundamental
component of armature
voltage, due to the
fundamental negative
sequence component of
armature current, to this
component of armature
current at rated frequency
 It
is the ratio of fundamental
component of armature
voltage, due to the
fundamental zero sequence
component of armature
current, to this component of
armature current at rated
frequency.
 Negative sequence can arise
whenever there is any unbalance
present in the system.
 In case of a synchronous
machine, negative sequence
currents create a rotating mmf in
opposite direction to the rotor
mmf.
 Hence it harmful for the
alternator, a NEGATIVE
SEQUENCE REALY is connected
in the alternators as a
protection device.
 It prevent the negative
sequence fault current to flow
from armature coil by tripping
the alternator .
