Essentialism
It is rooted from Idealism and
Realism.
It is a theory which asserts that
education properly involves the
learning of the basic skills, arts,
and sciences that have been
useful in the past and are likely
to remain useful in the future.
It focuses on INTELLECTUAL
DISCIPLINE.
Essentialists believe that there exist
a critical core of information and
skill that an educated person must
have.
William Bagley, an American
philosopher, introduced this
philosophy in education in the
1930’s.
Aim: To promote intellectual growth
and educate the competent
person.
Knowledge: Essential skills, master of
concepts, and principles
Role of Teacher: Authority in the field
Teaching method: Explicit teaching
of traditional values; tough discipline
Essentialism as a teacher-centered
philosophy
The teacher teaches discipline and
hard work.
The teacher is an expert of content
knowledge.
The teacher is accountable for
students’ learning.
The teacher dominates instruction.
CONCEPT OF ESSENTIALISM
According to essentialists, the school
curriculum should be geared to the
fundamentals or essentials.
Essentialism today is reflected in the
public demand to raise academic
standards and to improve the
students’ work and minds.
Essentialists’
beliefs
Students should be taught to be
a model citizen.
Teachers should teach
traditional moral values and
virtues.
They believe in mastery
learning.
Teaching process in Education:
Basic skills or fundamental R’s—
reading, writing, arithmetic, right
conduct—as these are essential to the
acquisition of higher or more complex
skills needed in the preparation for
adult life.
Implications:
Essentialist teachers emphasize
mastery of subject matter. They are
expected to be intellectual and
moral models of their students.
Area of Focus:
The essential skills of the 3 R’s
and essential subjects of
English, Science, History,
Math and Foreign Language
is the focus of the curriculum.
