Parallelism (Clauses) : Prepared By: Mr. Mhilwin A. Esto Malayan High School of Science///2017

The document discusses parallelism in clauses. It provides examples of parallel and non-parallel structures using clauses. Parallel structures must maintain the same pattern, such as using all clauses. Changing the voice or pattern breaks parallelism. There are three main types of clauses: noun clauses, adjectival clauses, and adverbial clauses. Several examples are given to demonstrate parallelism using clauses and corrections to make the structures parallel.

Parallelism (Clauses)

Prepared by:
Mr. Mhilwin A. Esto
Malayan High School of Science///2017
Parallelism (Clauses)
• A parallel structure that begins with clauses
must keep on with clauses. Changing to another
pattern or changing the voice of the verb (from
active to passive or vice versa) will break the
parallelism.
Example:
• Not Parallel
The coach told the players that they should get a lot of
sleep, that they should not eat too much, and to do some
warm-up exercises before the game
•Parallel
The coach told the players that they should get
a lot of sleep, that they should not eat too much, and
that they should do some warm-up exercises before
the game
or
The coach told the players that they should get
a lot of sleep, not eat too much, and do some warm-up
exercises before the game
Types of Clauses
• Noun Clause
All knew that this internet was the cause of
the war and that this internet was the object for
which insurgents would rend the Union.
• Adjectival Clause
The war that causes much destruction and its
devastation that dampens the people’s spirit has
made peaceful talks elusive.
• Adverbial Clause
God may will that war continues until all the
wealth shall be so sunk and until every drop of
blood shall be paid.
Let’s Try No. 1
• The salesman expected that he would present his
product at the meeting, that there would be time for him
to show his slide presentation, and that questions would
be asked by prospective buyers.
Parallel Structure:
The salesman expected at the meeting that he would
present his product, that there would be time for him to
show his slide presentation, and that prospective buyers
would ask him questions.
Let’s Try No.2
• My parents did not approve of my actions or
what I said.
Parallel Structure:
My parents did not approve of what I did nor what I
said.
Let’s Try No. 3
• On the last night of awesome ninja training, the
Master told his students that they must be
stealthy, that they must be cunning, and to be
quick.
Parallel Structure:
On the last night of awesome ninja training, the

they must be cunning, and that they must be quick.
