Functional Independent Measure
Functional Independent Measure
Rukhsar Sardar
• Developed in 1987 in response to Berthel Index
• It not only measures the independence or dependency
but also the physical and cognitive disability and
burden of care
• Assess 6 areas of function
1. Self care
2. Sphincter control
3. Mobility
4. Locomotion
5. Communication
6. Social Cognition
• Consist of 18 Items divided into two basic
domains
1. PHYSICAL (13)
2. COGNITION (5)
• Physical = Berthel Index
• Cognitive INTERACTION
EXPRESSION
PROBLEM SOLVING
COMPREENSION

SCORING
• Each Item scored 7 points on likert score
• 1= Complete dependency
• 7= Complete independency
• The total score for the FIM motor subscale (the
sum of the individual motor subscale items) will
be a value between 13 and 91.
• The total score for the FIM cognition subscale
(the sum of the individual cognition subscale
items) will be a value between 5 and 35
• Total score = 18____126
ADVANTAGES
1. Not too lengthy
2. Effective in predicting the burden of care
following stroke
3. Gives you more detail information as there
are wide ranges of choices
LIMITATION
1. Its reliability is dependent on the individual
conducting this measure, training and
education are the pre requisite for good level
inter-rater reliability.
2. Evaluation of responsiveness FIM and BI were
found out to have same effect size, thus we
can say that FIM does not have any real
advantage in form of responsiveness apart
from more items and precise score range.
