Project

This project involves the design of a roller conveyor system and hoisting mechanism for an EOT crane. The roller conveyor was designed to carry loads up to 300kg efficiently using components like a motor, rollers, chain and sprocket, bearings, and support structure. The hoist design for the 5 ton EOT crane included material selection, basic calculations, and the design of the hook, wire rope, sheave groove, rope drum, and motor. A cost estimate of Rs. 3,53,420 was calculated. Future improvements discussed include reducing weight through optimization and fatigue analysis. The designs were concluded to enable efficient material transportation with less human interaction.

History
The first cranes were invented by the Ancient Greeks and were powered by men or
beasts-of-burden, such as donkeys. These cranes were used for the construction of tall
buildings.

The earliest cranes were constructed from wood, but cast iron and steel took over with the
coming of the Industrial Revolution.

The first ‘mechanical’ power was provided by steam engines, the earliest steam crane
being introduced in the 18th or 19th century,

Modern cranes usually use internal combustion engines or electric motors and hydraulic
systems to provide a much greater lifting capability
ABSTRACT
 There are various material handling equipments which are used in various
industries.

 The major use of these systems is transportation of worked products from

one working zone to next working zone.

 These systems are really convenient as they reduce human efforts and
meanwhile decrease time required for transportation and handling.

 This report focuses on Design and Analysis of Material Handling System

where specifically we have designed Roller Conveyer and EOT Crane Hook

 Company provided us various data to design roller conveyor and hoisting

mechanism.
>> The project consists of following aspects:

1. Analysis of requirement
2. Design economy and optimization
3. Design validation
4. Material selection
5. Fabrication and test
Various conveyor systems :-

1) Vertical conveyor systems

2) Roller conveyor system
3) Static Wheel conveyors
4) Powered conveyors
5) Live Roller Conveyors
Various types of Cranes:-

1) Railroad crane
2) Mobile crane
3) Tower crane
4) Hammerhead crane
5) Gantry crane
6) EOT crane
>> Selection of ideal conveyor
system
• Moudlarity
• Flexibility
• Scalability
• Safety
• Ergonomics

>> Material Selection Parameters :-

• Availability of the materials.

• Suitability of materials for the

working condition in service.

• The cost of materials.

• Physical and chemical properties of

material.
DESIGN OF ROLLER CONVEYOR

1. Selection of Motor
2. Design of Roller
3. Selection of Chain & Sprocket
4. Bearing selection
5. Shaft design and key selection
6. Design of bush and circlip
7. Design of angle
Objective of implementing conveyors

 To minimize actual work in manual handling.

 Increase in automation to reduce manual mistakes.
 Decrease in handling time and increase in productivity.
 Improve ergonomic consideration of each operator.
DESIGN OF HOISTING MECHANISM FOR EOT
CRANE
1. Material Selection
2. Basic Calculation of 5 ton EOT Crane
3. Design of Hook :-
Throat of hook (J)
Depth of C/s (h)
Inner & Outer Width of Trapezoidal C/s
C/s Area
Radius of both axis (Rn) & (Rg)
Resultant Stresses
Bed diameter (C)

4. Design of Wire Rope

5. Sheave Groove
6. Rope Drum
7. Motor
8. Gearbox
Care (Maintenance)
For proper, long term and efficient working of the conveyor system installed some care
and preventive maintenance steps must be followed.

 Before starting maintenance

Power (on/off) light
Only properly trained maintenance personnel to work on the conveyor.
 During system running
Do not wear loose clothing while performing maintenance on operating
equipment
Mis-aligned parts are dangerous as conveyor is started after maintenance is
completed.
 After maintenance
Inspection clear any foreign objects from equipment.
Clean the surrounding.
Cost Estimation

 The Total cost of conveyor system has been efficiently

calculated and estimated as ₨. 3,53,420/-

 T = Cost of standard parts +cost of fabricated parts +

Machining cost
= 1,72,350 + 1,61,070 + 20,000 = ₨. 3,53,420/-
FUTURE SCOPE
• Existing design calculations show that the Factor of Safety is very large than
requirement and hence it indicates the scope of weight reduction.

• Fatigue analysis for life calculation. Fatigue analysis can be done by obtaining the SN
curve. ANSYS predicts the number of cycles of different regions.

• Buckling analysis of support channels can be done to find maximum load.

• Non linear analysis:

Material non-linearity can be considered to find out more accurate results.

• Selection of appropriate material:

By selecting inferior quality of material further weight reduction is possible.

• Thermal analysis can be considered for further study.

• To reduce volume of rope drum we use double winding of rope causing less weight of
hoisting mechanism and therefore also affecting the cost.
CONCLUSION
• We have successfully designed a roller conveyor for carrying a load of
up to 300 kg efficiently. This enables mass transportation of raw
materials and finished products efficiently and with less human
interaction.

• The design of the Hoist for EOT crane is done numerically, we can
implement the design practically in industries for various lifting jobs.
The design of hoist model with trapezoidal cross section shows less
stress compared to other cross sections.
