Functional Groups

IB
Objectives
• Concepts:
• –Functional group, alkane, alkene, alkyne, alcohol,
carbonyl, aldehyde, ketone, carboxylic acid, ether,
ester, amine, amide, halogenoalkane
• –Primary alcohol, secondary alcohol, tertiary alcohol,
primary amine, secondary amine, tertiary amine,
• Skills:
• –Draw and state names of the compounds containing
up to six carbon atoms with the following functional
groups: aldehyde, ketone, carboxylic acid, alcohol,
amide, amine, ester and halogenoalkane.
Functional Groups
• As has already been indicated, alkanes are
relatively unreactive.
• For an organic molecule to be reactive it needs
something additional.
• A site of reactivity in an organic molecule is called
a functional group.
• C=C double is a functional group.
• Other functional groups contain elements other
than C or H, notably O, N and Cl.
Functional Group
• A functional group could be an atom or a
group of atoms within a molecule that is
responsible for its characteristic
chemical reactions.

ARENE (aromatic ring)

• aryl is any functional gro

up or substituent derived
from an aromatic ring, us
ually an aromatic hydroc
arbon.
HALIDES

• Alkyl halides [hal

IMINE (Shiff Base)

• is a functional group or
chemical compound cont
aining a carbon–nitrogen
double bond. The nitroge
n atom can be attached t
o a hydrogen (H) or an o
rganicgroup (R). If this gr
oup is not a hydrogen at
om, then the compound
can sometimes be referre
d to as a Schiff base.
MONOPHOSPHATE

• A functional gro
up characterized
by a phosphorus
atom bonded to
four oxygen ato
ms (three single
bonds and one d
ouble bond).
DIPHOSPHATE

• A functional group contai

ning 2 phosphate groups
NITRILE

• nitrile group, a carbon i

s triple-bonded to a nitro
gen. Nitriles are also ofte
n referred to as cyano gr
oups.
THIOL
• Thiols contain sulfhydryl group (-SH), similar to alco
hols, but sulfur instead of oxygen. IUPAC rules for
naming thiols: similar to alcohols, except “-thiol” is
added at the end of the name of the parent alkane
Thiol compounds have strong smells (onion, garlic
etc.)
DISULFIDE
SULFOXIDE

• Similar to ketone bu

THIOESTER
• Similar to ester b
utsulfur replaces t

ACID HALIDE
• X can be Cl, F, Br

CARBOXYLIC ACID ANHYDRIDE
• Results from the reaction of 2 carboxylic acids. Wat
