Rain Water Harvesting: Ahmar Khalil

Rainwater harvesting is a technology used to collect and store rainwater falling on rooftops rather than allowing it to run off. There are two main ways to harvest rainwater - surface runoff harvesting and rooftop rainwater harvesting. Rooftop rainwater harvesting systems catch rainwater as it falls on the roof and transport it via downspouts to a storage tank or barrels. The key components of these systems are the catchment area, transportation pipes, storage tanks, and sometimes filtration systems. Rainwater harvesting has advantages like being simple to implement with locally available materials and water quality suitable for domestic use, but also has disadvantages like unpredictable rainfall, initial costs, and need for maintenance.

RAIN WATER HARVESTING

AHMAR KHALIL
RAIN WATER HARVESTING
• Rainwater harvesting is a technology used for
collecting and storing rainwater from rooftops.
• Rainwater harvesting is the accumulation and
deposition of rainwater for reuse on site, rather
than allowing it to run off.
Uses of Rain water

• Recharge under ground water

• Gardening
• Drinking Purpose
• For irrigation purpose
Advantages
• Rainwater harvesting technologies are simple to
install and operate.
• Local People can easily be trained to implement
such technologies and construction materials are
also readily available.
• Rainwater usually is of acceptable quality for
domestic purpose.
How we can harvest rainwater?
• Broadly there are two ways harvesting
rainwater.
– Surface runoff harvesting
– Roof top rainwater harvesting
Roof top Rainwater Harvesting
• It is a system of catching rainwater where it
falls. In rooftop harvesting, the roof become
the catchments and the rainwater is collected
the roof of the house. This method is less
expensive and very effective.
Components of the roof top rainwater
harvesting system
• Catchment area
• Transportation
• Storage System
• Delivery System
Catchment Area
• The Surface that receives rainfall directly is
the catchment of rainwater harvesting
system.
Transportation
• Rainwater form rooftop should be carried
through down take water pipes or drains to
storage harvesting system.
Storage System
• All collected rain water are store in tank or
barrels used.
Filtration System

• Filters are used for treatment of water from

microorganisms. Its basic function is to purify
water.
Disadvantages:
• Unpredictable Rainfall
• Initial High Cost
• Regular Maintenance
• Storage Limits
