Use of Hand Tools in Computer Repair and Maintenance

Here are the key differences between preventive computer maintenance and troubleshooting: - Preventive maintenance involves regularly cleaning and performing maintenance tasks to prevent problems from occurring. Troubleshooting is the process of diagnosing and resolving existing issues. - The goal of preventive maintenance is to maximize uptime and performance by addressing small issues before they become bigger problems. Troubleshooting addresses problems that have already manifested. Adopting a periodic maintenance plan is necessary because it: - Helps ensure all maintenance tasks are completed regularly to keep the computer running optimally. Neglecting maintenance can allow small problems to escalate over time. - Provides a schedule for tasks like cleaning, backups, software updates and hardware

USE OF HAND TOOLS IN COMPUTER

REPAIR AND MAINTENANCE
KAREN V. LAT
THE COMPUTER HARDWARE

• Consists of all physical elements that you can actually touch. They are
subdivided into five different categories which are as follows:
INPUT DEVICES

• These are the parts that are used to enter data into the computer system.
Examples of these are mouse, keyboard and microphone.
OUTPUT DEVICES

• They are the ones that are used by the computer to show its output to the
user. Examples of these are the monitor, speaker and printer.
PROCESSING DEVICES

• These devices acts as the computer’s nervous system. They are used
to process the input data coming from the user, process such data
and show the output to the user.
PRIMARY STORAGE DEVICE

• These devices acts as the temporary storage of a computer data. The

processing devices work only on data that are stored on these devices. Such
devices are often referred to as: RAM or Random Access Memory
SECONDARY STORAGE DEVICE
• They act as the permanent storage device of the computer. A secondary
storage device keeps its data even when power is turned off in contrast to
the primary storage device whose data is lost once the power is off.
COMPUTER MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES
MECHANICAL MAINTENANCE

• Computers should be cleaned once every 4-6 months. However, if your

computer is often used and operates in a non-air-conditioned room, it should
be cleaned more frequently. To clean your computer, you will need the
following: 1. screwdriver, 2. can of compressed air, 3. cleaning liquid, 4.
cotton swabs and 5. paper towel or cotton cloth. The general cleaning
procedure includes cleaning the keyboard, mouse, monitor, case, interior,
DVD/CD drives, hard drive and printer.
ELECTRICAL MAINTENANCE

• It is often advisable to use surge protectors on a computer (a device that sits

between your computer and main outlets). When a surge protector is
connected to a computer, it regulates the current by either blocking or
shorting to ground any “unsafe” voltage. One known surge protector is the
“UPS” or the “Uninterruptible Power Supply”.
SOFTWARE OR HARD DISK MAINTENANCE
• It is often advisable to do the following:
• Installing Antivirus Software protects your computer from virus.
• Defragmenting your computer cleans out fragmented files and folder on
a hard drive. It arranges the scattered files in a more organized,
continuous manner, thereby reducing the time needed by the computer to
access a particular file.
• Regular cleaning up of hard disk by removing files that are not needed.

Answer the following:
1. How will you differentiate preventive computer maintenance from
computer troubleshooting?
2. Why is it necessary to adopt a periodic maintenance procedure
plan?
3. Why is it necessary to clean the computer from dust, dirt and other
particles?
4. often, computers are placed in an air conditioned room. Why is this
so?
5. What is an anti-virus? Do you know of any anti-virus software?
Name them.
