ABSTRACT

Internet usage is the using of internet in different purposes. Ever since the

1840’s where technology has started, it has progressed over the years. Along with the

development of technology came the internet. The internet became advanced along

the years, and it had a lot of advantages to offer. We have leveled out 3 advantages

that are connected to the students which are Information, Communication and

Entertainment. As we tallied out the data, we have found out that most of the

respondents used the internet for research of data for their different school works.

Since everything can be found in the internet because of its wide database,

the students have become dependent of it.

CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

INTRODUCTION

Today, the life of people worldwide is influenced by technological

advancements, to where they became dependent for fast solutions. They search for

better way and ideas to accomplish tasks. The Internet is the solution.

The internet can be perceived as a rich, multi-layered complex of ever

changing text for information dissemination and a medium for conjoined interaction

between individuals and computers without notice for geographical limitation of

space. The internet now is a worldwide entity whose nature cannot be easily defined.

It is one of the beneficial tool in this era especially in the academic point of view and

enhances the skills and capabilities of a student that can assist them in their studies.

Students use the internet as a main source of information on their various fields in

education. They use the internet in their assignments, presentations, research works

and examination.

Besides that, the Internet revolution is not just limited on finding information.

The Internet is also used as a way to communicate with other people through email,

instant messaging and social network. Students also use

NEGROS ORIENTAL HIGH SCHOOL

the Internet to download music, movies and play online games. Jones (2003) reported

that 70% of college students play video, computer or online games at least once in a

while, and 65% are regular or occasional gamers. Patterns of online behavior may be

examined in terms of characteristic use of the Internet to communicate, access

websites and play games.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study is to examine the advantages of internet usage among Negros

Oriental Senior High school students. The lack of learning materials on the different

strands of the Negros Oriental Senior High school Department have led the Senior

High students to rely on the internet because of its capabilities and advantages it has

to offer. The study therefore is an endeavor to prove how true these advantages work

well for the students.

Specifically, this study aims to answer the following questions

1. What is the demographic profile of the students in terms of;

1.1 Sex

1.2 Age

1.3 Household family Income

1.4 General Average (grade last semester)

Concept of Internet

According to (Christensson,2015) the internet is a global wide area network that

connects computer systems across the world. It is an international network of

networks that consists of millions of private, public, academic, business and

government packet switched networks, linked by a broad array of electronics,

wireless, and optical networking technologies. It is a mode of communications

through which one can receive, transmit information that can be used for single or

multiple operations. According to Welle (2000) the internet carries a vast range of

information resources and services like the interlinked hypertext documents of the

World Wide Web (WWW) and the infrastructure to support

mail.
NEGROS ORIENTAL HIGH SCHOOL
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL CURRICULUM

Dumaguete City

According to (Ahi, 2005) Researchers, journalists, and etc. can publish and

also access several publications across the nation through the internet, even from

their homes or personal computers once they are connected to the internet. The main

functional advantage of the internet comes from its openness to share information

with others so that everyone will benefit.

Shitta (2002) thinks that the internet is a communication highway that links, hooks,

and focuses the entire world into a global community where people from all races can

easily get in touch, see or speak to one another and exchange information form one

point of the globe to another access to the internet and preferred location of internet

use.

Internet access refers to the means by which users connect to the internet. Places

of access to the internet include libraries, internet cafes and various places where

computer with internet connections are available. In Africa nowadays, the rate at

which people particularly the students are gaining access to the internet is

progressing. However, there are restrictions regarding the time of access. Participants

in (Jackson et.al, 2009) study conducted in Washington showed had positive attitudes

toward the internet even though they knew of the negative side of it, such as

inappropriate websites for children.

The Use of Internet Services

NEGROS ORIENTAL HIGH SCHOOL
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL CURRICULUM

Dumaguete City

In using the internet for education allows a wide range of resources all over

the world to be accessed. Resources can be well-organized in the internet which

makes it easy for information and exchange students and teachers alike use of the

web because someone has already finished the work of looking for the information

for them. The internet allows students and teachers “to exchange greetings, exchange

intellectual discourse, conduct meetings, share knowledge. Offer emotional support,

make plans, brainstorm ideas, learn about other cultures and otherwise broaden their

mental horizon. “The internet provides an activation of sight, sound and cognitive

reasoning, engaging students to be active learners.

La Rose and Eastin (2004) confirmed Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory

(Bandura,1986) that suggests six basic types of incentives for human behavior: novel,

sensory, social status, monetary, enjoyable activity, and selfreactive incentives. When

applied to the Internet, activity outcomes include hearing one’s favorite music,

playing a game one likes, cheering oneself up and feeling entertained. Monetary

outcomes include finding bargains on the Internet, saving time shopping, getting free

information and getting products for free. Novel outcomes are obtaining information

and assessing new knowledge. Social outcomes include obtaining support from

others maintaining a relationship, finding alike peers, providing help to others, and

feeling like one

belongs. Self- re active outcomes include relieving boredom, passing the time,

feeling alone, forgetting problems, and feeling relaxed. Status outcomes are finding

people who respect one’s views, improving future prospectsand getting up to date

with technology.

Through the Internet many different activities can be used for the students to

enhance their education. Hicks (2002) concluded that the internet is a double- edged

sword, as students can gain access to any educational database; learn about any

country, they can also be exposed to perverse and deviant topics. Ebersole (2002)

pointed out that there are four (4) basic types of internet usage. These are;

i. Website. which provides documents or collection of documents that can

be read for informational purposes. Also, thousands of libraries are

connected to the internet. Letting casual users permit access to their

catalogues. In addition to those information services, the number of

journals, newspapers, research and trade magazines increase each day.

ii. Email, is just like sending/or receiving messages through the computer,

students use email to keep in touch with relatives and friends who are

far away and to work on a project with someone who is kilometers

away. Email is a low-cosy form of

NEGROS ORIENTAL HIGH SCHOOL
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL CURRICULUM
Kagawasan Avenue, Capitol compound
Dumaguete City

communication unlike telephone or standard postal services that need

sub-charges.

iii. Chat rooms are internet facilities where students can communicate with

each other on the computer at the same time, typing messages to each

other.

iv. News Group is an electronic bulletin board. News Group is an example

of the use of internet in facilitating the development social & political

perspective in students.

ADVANTAGES OF THE INTERNET IN EDUCATION

i. Access to information

A major advantage of the internet is its ability to access all type of

information from library resources all over the world, including magazines, books,

newspapers and journals publications, instantaneously. The information increase the

learning potential by providing students with the latest information students using

search engines can find information quicker and more tailored to their specific needs.

The internet is a powerful instrument for assisting students and educators in

conducting research. Forums on a number of sites allow peoples to discuss and share

their thoughts and informations with others located

NEGROS ORIENTAL HIGH SCHOOL
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL CURRICULUM

at different places all over the world. Whether this information is the latest news

happenings in the world

ii. Communication

Another advantage of using the internet is its ability to allow you to

communicate quickly to large number of people. Email allows students and teachers

to contact one another even if they cannot physically meet. Students can submit

assignments via email or some other online submission system, which can cut down

the amount of paper waste produce by the institution.

iii. Entertainment

Entertainments is another reason why many people prefer to surf the internet.

The internet has revolutionized the entertainment industry.

Internet as an Information resources

The emerging of the internet has meant that vast amounts of information

resources that were previously mostly limited to libraries and bookstores can

be made available to a much wider community. distance, availability, and access to

information are restrictions that to a large extend have been removed. The internet is

also considered a reservoir of information. On the internet, users are able to access e-

resources freely or at a fee. Some of the material resources

Kagawasan Avenue, Capitol compound
Dumaguete City

found on the internet are e-books, newspaper, database, e-joumals and online

encyclopedias.

A major academic advantage of the internet is free, easy, and immediate access

to large amounts of information on any topic. Luambano and Nawe (2004) recognize

that the internet has become an important part in academic institution as it plays a

pivotal role in meeting the needs of information and communication of the

institution. (Luambano&Nawe 2004:13-17) says that the internet:

* increases access to information all over the globe.

* provides scholars and academic institutions with an avenue to disseminate

information to a wider audience worldwide.

* enables students and scholars at different locations on the globe to exchange

ideas on various fields of study.

* has enabled the growth of distance learning within nations and across

international borders through e-education.

* provides students and lectures with a communication system to communicate

regardless of distance.

According to (Richardson,2006) the new web 2.0 technologies and websites such

as blogs, wikis and YouTube make new demands on learning and they provide new

learning support even as they dismantle some of the learning support upon which

educations dependent in the past. Some of the benefits using blogs in educations are:

• It critical and analytical thinking

• It promotes creative intuitive and associational thinking

• It promotes analogical thinking

• It refers potential for increased access and exposure to equality information

• It provides a combination of solitary communication and social

interaction.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

USES AND GRATIFICATIONS THEORY. Seeks to understand why

people seek out the media that they do and what they use it for. According to

Katz (1959), the outcomes of media usage depend on why and how they decided

to use the media that choose to be engaged and gratification that get from the

media (Ruggiero,2000). Newhagen and Rafaeli (1996). Mentioned that U&G

theory is suitable for the internet because internet has something suitable for

everyone, be it information-seeking, interpersonal communication,

entertainment, or escapism. In 1970, U&G studies focused on audience

motivation, which at the same time also proposed by McQuail, Blumler, and

Brown mentioned that media serve four important functions at the level of the

individual, which are (1) Emotional release through escapism and diversion

from routine or problems, (2) Social utility through companionship, (3) Value

reinforcement or personal identity through reality exploration, and (4) Self

enrichment through information

surveillance.

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

CONCLUSION

Findings of the study show that majority of the respondents spend 1-4

hours of internet per day and uses internet 1-5 times per day. Moreover,

majority uses internet in the comfort of their homes rather than using internet

at a cyber cafe. But also, the findings indicate that a handful of the

respondents uses the internet at a cyber cafe. Furthermore, majority uses the

internet for research information of assignments, reports and etc. in terms of

information, while majority strongly agree to use social networking sites such

as Friendster and facebook, etc. as means of communication. Results also

show that the respondents listen/download media (music, movies, TV shows)

as entertainment purposes. These results imply that students may have fair

hour of spending in the internet and may know the advantages of using the

internet. The results also show that these advantages are proven to be true

because a large percentage of the respondents know about these advantages

and have experienced them and are doing them.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Dumaguete City

Upon viewing the data in this study, the following recommendations were

made apparent for future research

School Administration. The school administration should provide a

computer facility, especially for the students who have no financial means to

afford their own personal computer or fee for an hour at a cyber cafe.

Parents. Parents should know that the internet is not a bad influence on a

student. They should know that the advantages of internet plays a big role in the

academic performance of a student.

Students. Students should learn how to properly use the internet in an ethical

and academic way.

Future Researchers. Have patience and be kind to the respondents. Make

your survey questionnaire shorter for their convenience and yours.
