Techniques
Useful Tips for Successful Oral
Presentations and Public speaking

IbnSina IPHMS 2010.

Use visual aids

A picture is worth a thousand

words
What does this picture say?
What does this say?
Or this…?
Keep it short and sweet

No one ever complained of a

speech being too short.
Rehearse

If you fail to prepare, you prepare

to fail.
Audience of an unrehearsed
presentation
Prepare

 Plan to rehearse your presentation out

loud at least 4 times.
 Rehearse against the clock
 Rehearse and you will get better.
Use the rule of three

People remember three things –

plan what the three things
your audience will remember.
Rule of three in memorable speeches
 Friends, Romans, Countrymen
 Stop, look, and listen
 formula for success – Dream, Plan, Action
 Lead, follow, or get out of my way .
 In a presentation—Tell them what you are
going to tell them, tell them, and then tell
them what you told them.
Rehearse
If you fail to prepare, you prepare to fail.

 Know what slide is coming next.

 Check out the conference room in
advance.
 Have a back-up plan.
The ‘You’ Approach

 Know you audience and their need – be in

contact with their ‘hot spots’

 Don’t be afraid to state the obvious; it may

not be obvious to the audience.
Link every element in your
presentation to an audience benefit
Negative Audience Reaction
 Ignore a negative ‘glarer’
 Never respond aggressively to a negative
glarer
 Say what you mean; mean what you say;
don’t make personal attacks; listen
respectfully; encourage people
Deportment
 Be optimistic, sound cheery, and smile.
That’s what people will remember.
Engage the audience

 It does not matter where you are speaking,

what you are speaking about or who you are
speaking to; ‘This is show business.’ Any
speech must entertain the audience.
Engage the audience

 The best funny anecdotes are the ones you tell

against yourself – they seldom fail and the
audience is on your side from then on.
Other Important Points
 Don’t put your speaker notes up on the
screen
 Know what slide is coming next
 Check out the presentation room

Have a back-up plan.
