- Is a layout of a network and how different nodes in a network are
connected to each other and how they communicate.

UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair) Cabling

- type of wiring in which 2 conductors of a single circuit are twisted together for the
purpose of improving electromagnetic compatibility.

1. CAT 3 – deployed in phone line


- 10mbps – 100 meters
2. CAT 4 – token ring network
- 16mbps – 100 meters
3. CAT 5 – Ethernet-based LAN’s, contain twisted pair
- 100mbps – 100 meters
4. CAT 5E – Ethernet-based LAN’s, contain 4 twisted pair
- 1 gbps – 100 meters
5. CAT 6 – ehternet-based LAN’s, and data center networks
- contain 4 tightly wound twisted pairs
- 1 gbps – 100 meters
- 10 gbps – 50 meters
RJ-45 (REGISTERED JACK)
- have 8 pins which means have 8 separate wires which have different
colors; 4 solid colors and 4 striped.

NETWORK CONFIGURATION/ NETWORK SETUP
- Process of setting a network s control, flow and operation to support a network
communication of an organization

ROUTER CONFIGURATION
Specifies the correct IP addresses and route settings, etc.

HOST CONFIGURATION
Sets up a network connection on a host computer/laptop by logging the default network
settings, such as IP addressing, proxy, network name and ID/password, to enable network
connection and communication.

SOFTWARE CONFIGURATION
Any network-based software, is allowed access and provided with the appropriate
credentials to monitor network traffic.
INTERNET PROTOCOL (IP) ADDRESS

- unique identifier for a computer.

A. STATIC IP ADDRESS

- manual configuration of computers network settings.

B. DYNAMIC IP ADDRRESS

- assigned by DHCP and active for limited time only

IPv4 address

– expressed by four numbers separated by dots


ex. 192.168.100.15

IPv6 address
– expressed by eight groups of hexadecimal numbers separated by colons.
Ex. 2001:cdba:0000:0000:0000:0000:3257:9652/ 2001:cdba::3257:9652
