Course On LNG Business-Session11

Floating LNG terminals are an emerging concept that provide flexible and low-cost solutions for LNG import and export. Floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs) can be converted ships or new builds that offer regasification and storage, providing quick access to gas markets at a lower capital cost than onshore terminals. Over 40 FSRUs are currently in operation worldwide, with the number of countries using them growing as they offer a flexible option to quickly start LNG imports.

Session-11
Emerging Technologies in Gas
Market-Part-1
Floating LNG terminals
An emerging concept
• Floating terminal concept started for regasification terminal but now it is being considered for liquefication
terminals also
• Floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) concept initially involved converting an old LNG ship into a
storage cum regasification unit by installing regasification plant and unloading arms on the ship.
• In case of old ship conversion propeller may be retained or removed depending upon the plans to use the ship
Concept after conversion (propeller removal to avoid dry docking requirements)

• Low gestation period

• Lower capital cost
• Flexibility in commercial structure. Available on charter hire also. Further it can be easily shifted to another
location (good in case of uncertain market conditions)
Advantages • Minimal environment foot print
of FSRU • Major limitation of FSRU is limited storage capacity

• With large number of countries showing interest to start LNG imports, they look for quick and flexible solutions
• FSRU is now so popular that some of the players have started building new ships to act as FSRU without having
any commitment for its use at the time of order
Speculative • Currently more than 40 FSRUs are in operation in the world
