What is Vaginal Discharge?
• Vaginal discharge is a secretion( other than the normal
mensrual flow) that is in semi-solid or liquid form and is
contained within or released from the vagina.
• A normal vaginal discharge is milky or clear with a non-
offensive smell.
• While most discharges is milky and reflect the various
stages of the menstrual cycle or female gender
development, some are as a result of vaginal irritations
from the use of objects/ substances on the vagina or
from infections contacted as result of poor hygiene or
unprotected sex.
The CCOTV Formula
• The following properties should be observed in your
discharge:
1. Change in COLOUR (especially greenish, grayish, or
anything looking like pus)
2. Change in CONSISTENCY/frequency (especially to
daily)
3. Change in ODOUR (ESPECIALLY an unpleasant
odour)
4. Change in TEXTURE or nature (such aas foamy or
looking like cottage cheese)
5. Change in VOLUME (especially from small or scanty
to large)
CCOTV cound.
• The ccotv of vaginal discharge depends on:
1. The age of woman
2. The stages of her menstrual cycle, and
3. The use of contraception
Groups of vaginal Discharge
• Vaginal discharge can be grouped into 2, viz:
1. Physiological discharge
2. Pathological discharge
Physiological discharge
• Physiological vaginal discharge
Physiological causes of vaginal dischages or is
increase in volume include:
1. Pregnancy
2. Ovulation
3. Sexual arousal and intercourse
4. Foreign bodies (e.g. reained tampons, condoms) –
causes foul smelling dark coloured discharge
5. Hormonal birth control methods
6. Changing hormone levels
• Pathological vaginal discharge
Pathological causes of vaginal discharges
include:
1. Infective (non-sexually transmitted)
Bacterial vaginosis
Candidal vagininitis.

2. Infective (sexually transmitted)


Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae,
Trichomonas vaginalis, herpes simplex.
WHEN DOES VAGINAL DISCHARGES
BECOME A SIGN OF AN INFECION?
• Vaginal discharges might be a sign of an
infection if it:
1. Causes itching
2. Causes smelling
3. Has a bad odour
4. Is green, yellow, or gray in colour
5. Looks foamy or like cottage cheese
How to prevent abnormal vaginal
discharges
1. Cleanliness of environment and practise of good
feminime hygiene.
2. Wash your underwear and clothes properly with
clean water
3. Go for reguler clinical check-up
4. Eat healthy and nutritious foods
5. Avoid pre-material and unsafe sex
6. Keep vaginal area clean and dry. Wash the outer
vaginal area everyday and then rinse well.
