R.V. Institute of Technology: Seminar Project Presentation On

The document discusses the operation of solar water heating systems. It describes the basic components which include flat plate collectors, an insulated water storage tank, and connecting pipes. It explains the working principle where water is heated as it passes through the collector and rises into the storage tank. The types include closed loop and open loop systems. The advantages are that it provides free hot water with no running costs and is environmentally friendly.

INTRODUCTION

India is blessed with solar energy in abundance

at no cost.
India is having high solar insolation of about 4.4 -
6.6 KWh/m^2/day for an average of 280 sunny
days.
The highest annual Global radiation is received
in Rajasthan,Tamil Nadu,Gujarat.
INTRODUCTION

One of the popular cost-effective devices that

harness the solar energy is solar water heating
system.
Solar water heating system is a commercially
viable and technologically nature product.
Solar energy is an unlimited source of renewable
energy.
SCOPE IN INDIA

The Solar water heating system has the potential

to save millions in energy Costs in our country.
Solar water heating system can be a suitable
alternative to meet the growing demand of hot
water in the country.
Wood or Biomass is used for heating and it urban
areas electricity or fossil fuels are used for this
purpose.
DEMOSTRATION OF THE SOLAR WATER
HEATING SYSTEM
BASIC COMPONENTS OF SWHS

Flat plate collector

Insulated water storage tank
Well insulated pipe connecting flat plate
collector and the storage tank
Auxiliary heater (for cloudy days)
Control of the system
BASIC COMPONENTS OF SWHS
FLAT PLATE COLLECTOR

It is a device which is used to convert Solar

energy into thermal energy and consists of the
following components:
Absorber
Transparent cover
Insulation
Tubes,Fins
Frame
CUT-VIEW OF STORAGE TANK
AUXILIARY HEATER ( For cloudy days )

An Auxiliary heater is attached in the tank to

provide supplement heat during cloudy days.
Freezing production during Winter season.
Act as Heat exchanger.
WORKING PRINCIPLE OF SWHS
WORKING PRINCIPLE OF SWHS

 Water from the cold-water tank enter solar tank

and fill it up.
 The cold water from the Solar tank in turn flows the
bottom header pipe of the absorber.
 When the sun rises to a certain level, its energy
which falls on the absorber fins and tubes.
 The heated water being lighter than the cold
water rises and flow the top of the Solar tank.
TYPES OF SWHS

 the Solar water heating system are of two

categories:

1. Closed loop system.

2. Open loop system.
CLOSED LOOP SYSTEM

In the closed system, heat changers are

Installed to protect the system from the hard
water obtained from bore wells or freezing
temperatures in the cold regions.
CLOSED LOOP SYSTEM
OPEN LOOP SYSTEM

1. Natural circulation system.

2. Forced circulation system.
NATURAL CIRCULATION SWHS

Water from the lower of the tank enter into

collector plate heated up and rises in the copper
tube column.
Hot water enter at the top of the
storage tank via upper heater
of the collector.
FORCED CIRCULATION SWHS

Source of cold water supply can be at any level

as water shall be pumped into the system.
SALIENT FEATURES OF SWHS

Around 60-80*C temperature can be attended

depending on the solar radiation.
Hot water for homes,hostels,hotels,Hospitals,
restaurants,industries,etc.
SWH system generate hot water on Clear sunny
days.
Larger systems can be used in restaurants, guest
houses,hotels,hospitals,Industries,etc.
ADVANTAGES

Simple to construct and install.

No and negligible running cost.
Almost maintenance free.
 Economically competitive with electric water
heating system.
It’s safe time and high grade from the electric
energy.
DISADVANTAGES

Dependent on climate.
Relatively low efficiency of passive Solar water
heating systems.
They require excellent overheating and freeze
protection.
Solar water heating system is relatively high
upfront costs.
APPLICATION OF SWHS

Bathing.
Various industrial applications.
Laundry application in hotels,Hospitals, hostels,
cooking.
SWIMMING POOL SOLAR WATER HEATER
CONCLUSION

Source is abundant in Nature so enjoy with free

cost of energy.
Cheaper cost as compared to other heating
system.
Due to constraints on energy availability. It is
most suitable.
Keep the environment clean.
