REGION V
• Bicol is a region in the Philippines encompassing the southern part of Luzon Island and nearby provinces.
• Historically Bicol is also known as “IBALONG” because of Spanish colonization.
• It is composed of 6 Provinces
- Albay - Catanduanes
- Masbate - Camarines Norte
- Camarines Sur - Sorsogon

• It has 7 cities
- Iriga - Sorsogon city
- Legaspi - Tabaco
- Ligao
- Masbate city
- Naga
The people of Bicol or “Bikolano” are the fifth largest Philippine ethnolinguistic group. They are largely an
agricultural and rural people, producing rice, coconuts, and hemp. Nearly all of them are Christians,
predominantly Roman Catholics, but with some Protestant minorities. Their language, which is actually a
collection of closely-related varieties, is closely related to other languages of the central Philippines, all of
which belong to the Austronesian (specifically Malayo-Polynesian) super-family of languages.
The main languages of Bicol are
 Albayanon
 Rinconada
 Sorsoganon
Other languages are Tagalog and Visayan languages such as
 Kinaray-a
 Masbateño
 Waray-waray
TRADITIONS & CULTURE
• Bikolano men are expected to assume the role of becoming the primary source of income and financial support
of his family. Close family ties and religiosity are important traits for survival in the typhoon-prone physical
environment.
• Some persisting traditional practices are the pamalay, pantomina and tigsikan. Beliefs on god, the soul and life
after death are strongly held by the people. Related to these, there are annual rituals like
the pabasa, tanggal, fiestas and flores de mayo. Side by side with these are held beliefs on spiritual beings as
the tawo sa lipod, duwende, onglo, tambaluslos, kalag, katambay, aswang and mangkukulam.
• Bicolanos observe an annual festival in honor of the Virgin of Peñafrancia every third Sunday of September. The
towns of Naga comes alive. During the celebration, a jostling crowd of all-male devotees carries the image of the
Virgin on their shoulders to the cathedral, while shouting Viva La Virgin! For the next seven days people, mostly
Bicolanos, come for an annual visit light candles and kisses the image of the Virgin.
• Tinagba Festival in Iriga City
-A tradition of the first harvest offering coinciding on the feast day of Our Lady of Lourdes. Derived from the
early rituals of the ancient Bicolanos offering their harvest to their own gods as a form of thanksgiving and to seek
favor for a more bountiful harvest throughout the year.
• Himag-ulaw Festival Placer, Masbate - A celebration of praise and thanksgiving for the bountiful harvest in
farming or good catch in fishing expressed through various forms of activities like street dancing, beauty
competition, games and contests, food fairs, among others.
LITERATURES

Imprenta de Nuestra Señora De Peñafrancia is the first printing press in Bicol. It was established by Mariano
Perfecto and he also published the first Bicol newspaper the “An Parabareta” or “The newsman”.
Bicol corridos the most popular was Mag-amang Pobre (The Poor Father and Son).
The comedia or moro-moro the most populaer was Comedia ni Hadeng Grimaldo sa Reinong Irlanda by
Sabas Armenta and Drama en Comedia de la Vida Conde Urbano by Juan Miraflor
Popular poem in Bicol was the “Opon sa Ibalon: Kan mahale an Maskara” (The Board in Ibalon When
Unmasked) by Francisco Penones, Jr
