New elements of the year 3 project
• Introduce uncertainty within the design process
– Problem definition
– Process conditions
– Differences of opinion
• Compare different design concepts and selecting
the most appropriate for the given brief
• Introduce project scheduling, and the post-design
phases of a project
• 100% groupwork
Project Structure
• Other Support
– John Robinson: Module convenor, Task 2 lead
– Daniel Beneroso Vallejo: Task 1 lead
– Your personal tutor
Assessment
• All deliverables are the responsibility of the group and will
be assessed as a group
• Each deliverable will be assessed separately, by different
staff
• Assessment carried out using grading criteria, in three
bands (2.2, 2.1, 1)
– Grading criteria for each task available in advance on moodle
• Group mark established based on the mid-point of each
category (55, 65, 85)
• Individual marks are calculated by establishing a weighting
factor:
– Staff assessment (group supervisors, design reviews and
showcase event)
– Peer assessment

Assessment
• Your journey to the answer is much more
important than the answer itself
• There is no right answer – don’t waste your
and everyone else’s time trying to find one
• Staff have been briefed to ask ‘why?’
• Use the tools and techniques you have been
taught to give you the evidence you need to
make and support your decisions
Groups
• Engineers work in groups/teams
• Groups of mixed ability, nationality and discipline
