Six Stroke Engine

The document summarizes the working of a six-stroke engine. A six-stroke engine operates similar to a four-stroke engine but includes two additional strokes - a secondary power stroke and secondary exhaust stroke. This increases the efficiency and reduces emissions compared to a conventional four-stroke engine. Some key advantages of the six-stroke engine are that it can achieve up to 45% thermal efficiency, reduced fuel consumption and pollutants, and increased power generation over a four-stroke engine. However, it also faces drawbacks like cold starting issues and added complexity.

Comparision of 6-stroke engine with 4-stroke engine
Advantages
Drawbacks
Conclusion
Introduction:-
 Six stroke engine is a type of internal combustion engine based on conventional
4-stroke engine.

 But it’s additional 2-strokes make it more efficient and reduce the emission.

 The concept of six stroke engine was developed in mid 20th century when pollution due
to the conventional IC engine is increased.

 It’s main aim is to reduce the usage of fuel ,therefore to increase the thermal efficiency
of an engine.
Working principle:-
The working principle of six stroke engine is based on the concept of four stroke engine
but with some modification, another two strokes are added.
The various strokes involved in six stroke engine are
 Suction stroke
 Compression stroke
 Power stroke
 Exhaust stroke
 Secondary power stroke
 Secondary exhaust stroke
Working of six stroke engine
Suction stroke:-
In suction stroke the piston moves from top dead

center to the bottom dead center and creates

vacuum pressure, So that the Air and fuel

mixture is sucked in to the Cylinder through the

inlet valve.
Compression stroke:-
In compression stroke the piston moves from

bottom dead center to top dead centre and

compresses the Mixture. The mixture is

compressed To high temperature and pressure.

Power stroke:-
At the end of compression stroke the fuel is

ignited and burnt. The pressure inside the

cylinder increases rapidly and it pushes the

piston down and the power is transmitted from

piston to crank shaft.

Exhaust stroke:-
In exhaust stroke the Burnt product is pushed

through the exhaust valve by the upward

movement of the piston i.e.., the piston moves

from BDC to TDC.

Secondary power stroke:-
At the end of the exhaust stroke the cylinder temperature
becomes around 900-10000 C. At this stage water is I
injected by an Injector in the form of fine droplets. The
water turns in to vapour increasing volume around 1600
times when it comes in contact with the superheated cylinder.

The water turns into vapour increasing

volume around 1600 times when it comes in contact with
the superheated cylinder.
Secondary exhaust stroke:-
In secondary exhaust stroke the water

vapour is exhausted by the upward

motion of the piston i.e.., from BDC to

TDC.

Thermal efficiency:-
Brake specific fuel consumption:-
Comparision between 4-stroke & 6-stroke engine:-
4-Stroke 6-Stroke
• One power stroke • Two power strokes

• Upto 35% thermal efficiency • Upto 45% thermal effiiency

• More emission • Less emission

• Less power generation • More power generation

• Only one working fluid • Two working fluids

Advantages:-
 Due to an additional power stroke efficiency of the engine will be increased.
 Reduction in pollutants like NO, CO ,CO2,photochemical smog etc, up to 55%.
 Reduction in fuel consumption by at least 40%.
 Minimize necessity of heat exchanger e.g. radiator.
 Exhaust gas emission is low.
 High power generation than 4-stroke engine.
Disadvantages:-
 Running Problems in cold regions.
 Early engine starting problem.
 Separate water tank would have significant weight and space penalities.
 Requirement Of neutral water.
 Higher manufacturing costs.
Conclusion:-
Six stroke engine has many advantages like high thermal efficiency, low fuel
consumption, high break mean effective pressure, low emission. However drawbacks like
initial starting problem, availability of water are also associated. The starting problem can be
Can be eliminated by using heater or glow plug and coupling a dc motor as prime mover to
the engine. Now a days research and experiments are going on to modify the engine further
and to make it for practical purpose.
