Plan For Rainwater Harvesting Near Your Neighbourhood: Presented By: - Madhavan Manik Gaba Manan Sareen

The document presents a plan for rainwater harvesting near a neighborhood. It discusses what rainwater harvesting is, studies of rainwater harvesting in Jalandhar and LPU, and the benefits of rainwater harvesting. Rainwater harvesting involves collecting and storing rainwater for reuse on-site rather than allowing it to run off. It can provide water for gardens, livestock, and other uses. Studies showed potential for large rainwater collection and storage at LPU's 600-acre campus from buildings and playgrounds. Benefits include improved groundwater quality, higher water levels, drought mitigation, and reduced soil erosion.

What Is Rainwater Harvesting
?
 Rainwater harvesting is  the  accumulation  and  storage  of
rainwater for reuse on-site, rather than allowing it to run off.
  Rainwater  can  be  collected from roofs,  and  in  many  places,  the
water  collected  is  redirected  to  a  deep  pit  (well,  shaft,  or
borehole), aquifer,  a  reservoir  with  percolation,  or  collected
from dew or fog with nets or other tools.
  Its uses include water for gardens, livestock, irrigation, domestic
use  with  proper  treatment,  indoor  heating  for  houses,  etc.  The
harvested water can also be used as drinking water, longer-term
storage, and for other purposes such as groundwater recharge.
Study Of Jalandhar

 The  city  has  a  humid  subtropical  climate with  cool  winters  and

long,  hot  summers.  Summers  last  from  April  to  June  and  winters
from November to February. Temperature in the summer vary from
average  highs of around 48  °C (118 °F) to average lows of around
25 °C (77 °F).
 In winters there is much less rainfall in Jalandhar than in summers.
 Precipitation here averages 769mm.
 As  it  is  a  plain  area,  there  is  no  proper  water  drainage  system.
During  rainy  season  the  roads  are  filled  with  water  and  creates  a
unhealthy atmosphere
Study Of LPU

 The campus of LPU spread across 600 acres has some

architecturally striking buildings.
 The orientation of each building is such that it maximizes the
chance of collection of water.
 The total surface area of this campus is so large that it can store
huge amount of water for secondary use.
 We can use the water for irrigation, laundry etc.
 The area of playground can be used to make underground
storage tanks for water.
Problems Faced By Students In
LPU

 Water in campus can be managed properly and can be used later for better
use.
 This can serve to prevent the problem of water shortage.
Benefits Of Rainwater
Harvesting

 Improvement in quality of groundwater.
 Rise in water levels in wells and bore wells that are drying up.
 Mitigation of the effects of drought.
 Attainment of drought proofing.
 An ideal solution in areas having water problems.
 Reduction in soil erosion as the surface runoff is reduced.
Conclusion

 LPU should use rain water harvesting.

 This will serve to prevent the water shortage.
 This will help to increase the ground water level.
 This will prevent water logging.
 The saved water can be used for washing, irrigation
etc.
