 Mobile technology is a collective term used to describe the
various types of cellular communication technology.

 It is exactly what its name implies - technology that is portable.

 Since the beginning of this millennium, a standard mobile device

has gone from being no more than a simple two-way pager to
being a cellular phone, GPS navigation system, an embedded
web browser, and Instant Messenger client, and a hand-held
video gaming system.

 Many experts argue that the future of computer technology

rests in mobile/wireless computing.
 GSM
 CDMA

 3G
 4G
 Operating Systems
 Other Mobile Technologies
 GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications: originally
from Groupe Spécial Mobile) is a cellular network, which
means that mobile phones connect to it by searching for cells
in the immediate vicinity.

 The GSM logo is used to identify compatible handsets and
equipment. It is the most popular standard for mobile
telephony systems in the world.

 80% of the global mobile market uses this standard.

 GSM is used by over 3 billion people across more than 212

countries and territories.
 Code Division Multiple Accessis a digital cellular
technology that uses spread-spectrum techniques.

 When the mobile communications industry began its

transition from first-generation analog technology to
second-generation (2G) digital architecture,
manufacturers and operators chose sides.

 In Europe, frequency-hopping GSM architecture became

almost universal, while in the U.S. parts of Asia, and
elsewhere, spread-spectrum CDMA technology took a
large share of the market.
 Defined as the provision of wireless broadband data and information
services right to a person‘s mobile unit, the 3G connection promises
speeds ranging from 144 Kbps (which is 3 times faster compared to
the traditional 56K dial-up modem connection) up to 2.4 Mbps.

 Allows you to browse quickly through web pages, watch on-demand

video programs, download and play music, videos and games and
have a video conference with others located on the other side of the
plant.

 3G networks have the capability of transferring speeds up to 3 Mbps
which is equivalent to around 15 seconds for every download of a 3-
minute MP3 song. To compare, the speediest 3G cellular phones can
move speeds up to 144 Kbps, which is equivalent to around 8 minutes
to download a 3-minute MP3 song
 4G is the term used to refer to the next wave of high-speed mobile
technologies that will be used to replace current 3G networks.
Currently, the two top contenders are LTE and WiMAX, both of
which are IP based networks that are built from similar, yet
incompatible, technologies.

 4G is being developed to accommodate the quality of service (QoS)

and rate requirements set by further development of existing 3G
applications like mobile broadband access, Multimedia Messaging
Service (MMS), video chat, mobile TV, but also new services like
HDTV. 4G may allow roaming with wireless local area networks,
and may interact with digital video broadcasting systems.
 It has a flexible channel bandwidth, between 5 and 20 MHz,
optionally up to 40 MHzA nominal data rate of 100 Mbit/s
 Symbian OS is an operating system(OS) designed for mobile devices and
smartphones, with associated libraries, user interface, frameworks and
reference implementations of common tools.

 In 2008, the former Symbian Software Limited was acquired by Nokia .

 Maemo is a software platform developed by Nokia for smartphones and
Internet Tablets.
 The Existing Versions are-
◦ OS2005
◦ OS2006
◦ OS2007
◦ OS2008
◦ Diablo
◦ SSU
 Upcoming Versions
◦ Maemo 5
Android is a software stack for mobile devices that includes an operating system,
middleware and key applications that uses a modified version of the Linux
kernel. It was initially developed by Android Inc., a firm later purchased by Google,
and lately by the Open Handset Alliance. It allows developers to write managed
code in the Java language, controlling the device via Google-developed Java
libraries.
Existing Versions
1.5 (Cupcake) Based on Linux Kernel 2.6.27
2.0/2.1 (Éclair) Based on Linux Kernel 2.6.29
Upcoming Versions
2.2 (FroYo) Based on Linux Kernel 2.6.32
The iPhone (and iPod Touch) run an operating system known as iPhone OS.
It is based on a variant of the same Darwin operating system core that is
found in Mac OS X.

The user interface is built around the device's multi-touch screen, including
a virtual keyboard rather than a physical one.

Post the first iPhone, 3 more upgraded versions have been launched
namely iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS &iPhone 4 but the basic operating system
remains unchanged.
Windows Mobile is an operating system based on the Microsoft Win32 API. It was
designed specifically for handheld devices, originally the Pocket PC, then Smartphone‘s and
Portable Media Centers.

In its earliest form the windows mobile operating system was similar in look, feel and
functionality to Windows 98, delivering basic application delivery and minimal third-party
support for common hardware and software components.

Now with Windows XP, the taskbar holds the current time, volume connectivity status, and
resource processing. The notification bar holds all the standard desktop iconic
representations such as running programs, connectivity, etc.

In terms of application productivity the Mobile Office suite delivers impressively similar
functionality to its big brother Microsoft Office.

Windows Media Player also has extensive operability providing users with the
capability to play WMA, WMV, MP3 and AVI files, however MPEG's are not supported and
WAV files require a separate player.
 Existing Versions:
◦ Pocket PC 2000 and 2002
◦ Windows Mobile 2003
◦ Windows Mobile 5
◦ Windows Mobile 6
◦ Windows Mobile 6.1
◦ Windows Mobile 6.5

◦ Windows 7 Mobile
 Completely altered home screen and user interface experience
 Robust Xbox LIVE and Zune integration
 Vastly new and improved social networking tools.

 Mobile Widget
 Bluetooth
 Wi-Fi
 In computer software, a widget engine is a software service available to
users for running and displaying applets on graphical user interface, such
as that of the desktop.

 Most mobile widgets are like desktop widgets, but for a mobile phone.

 Mobile widgets can maximize screen space use and may be especially
useful in placing live data-rich applications on the device idle-
screen/home-screen/"phone-top".
 Bluetooth is a proprietary open wireless technology standard for
exchanging data over short distances from fixed and mobile devices.

 It can connect several devices, overcoming problems of synchronization.

 Existing Versions:

 A Wi-Fi enabled device such as a personal computer, video game console,
and mobile Phone, MP3 player or personal digital assistant can connect to
the Internet when within range of a wireless network connected to the
Internet.

 The coverage of one or more (interconnected) access points, called a

hotspot, can comprise an area as small as a few rooms or as large as many
square miles.
Cloud computing is Internet-based computing, whereby shared resources,
software, and information are provided to computers and other devices on
demand, like the electricity grid.
 Cloud computing- provides a way of delivering your IT requirements
online.

 Documents, emails, customer details and applications are all stored

remotely and accessed over the internet through a web browser.

 With cloud computing, users are able to access all their business
information over the internet, 'through the cloud'.

 Businesses can use smaller, more low-cost portable devices, such as smart
phones and net books, supporting more mobile and remote working
practices.
Mobile banking (also known as M-Banking, SMS Banking etc.) is a term used
for performing balance checks, account transactions, payments etc. via a
mobile device such as a mobile phone or Personal Digital Assistant (PDA).
Mobile banking today is most often performed via SMS or the Mobile Internet
but can also use special programs, called clients, downloaded to the mobile
device.
 Mobile marketing is broadly defined as “the use of the mobile medium
as a means of marketing communication” or “distribution of any kind of
promotional or advertising messages to customer through wireless
networks”.

 Mobile marketing via SMS

 Mobile marketing via MMS

 In-game mobile marketing

 Mobile web marketing

 Mobile technology is expanding its horizons and carving a niche for
itself in almost every possible field. And now it has ventured into
the field of medicine and healthcare too with the development of
mobile based softwares that are set to replace most of the handy
tools and equipment a doctor requires to examine his/her patients.

 These softwares are being built for the operating systems of a few
high end mobile phones such as iPhone and the recently introduced
android based phones.
 All in all, the future seems full of possibilities,
both absurd and endless. Innovation leads
the way to better and more complex
technologies. Innovation is fuelled by
humanity’s endless desire for betterment and
a constant need for comfort.
 Like the need for mobility was created out of

man’s need to work away from home, to work

while he travels. Look how far a simple
thought has got us.
