Written Text As Connected Discourse

Written text, like spoken language, can be viewed as "connected discourse" where sentences are linked together to form a unified whole known as a "text". While a text is composed of sentences, principles of text construction go beyond grammatical rules for individual sentences. Both written and spoken language exhibit connectedness through strategies that link and order linguistic items into greater blocks to convey ideas. Texts come in many genres and can be spoken or written forms of communication.

beyond the rules for making sentences. As an
extended structure of syntactic units, texts are

length, that does form a unified whole.
Connected speech, also known as “connected discourse” is spoken language
that is used in continuous sequence of sounds, just like in normal conversations.

pronounced in isolation and the way they are pronounced in the context of
connected speech.
In most aspects, written text shares the same nature as that of spoken language.
As connected discourse, written text is formed from spontaneous discreteness
that predetermined its connectedness. The engendered text serves as dominant
strategy of a writer from the point of linguistic structure to the forming of
appropriate and relevant units of ordering and linking of items into greater
blocks to be able to put ones ides across.
