MODELS OF DISABILITY

Charity Model
* The Charity Model sees people with
disabilities as victims of their impairment. Depending
on the disability, the disabled persons cannot walk,
see, learn, or work. Disability is seen as a deficit .
Persons with disabilities are not able to help
themselves and to lead an independent life.
* Person with disability is not an agent on
their own life but rather a recipient of care, cure and
protections.

Social Model
* People are disabled society aim to remove barriers
*Values social experience of disability

* Solutions/ change as social responsibility
SOCIAL MODEL
Economic Model
* Under this model, disability is defined by person`s
inability to participate in work. It also assesses the degree to
which impairment affects an individual`s productivity and the
economic consequences for the individual, employer and the
state
* Values based on productivity
Human Rights Model
* Goal: “ Ensure the equal, effective,
enjoyment of all human rights, without discrimination by
people with disabilities”
* Persons with disability should have
access to everything within their society and community on
an equal basis with others
