Dashain Festival
Dashain is celebrated with
great rejoice, and goddess
Durga is worshiped
throughout the country as the
divine mother goddess.
In preparation
for Dashain every home is
cleansed and beautifully
decorated, painted as an
invitation to the mother
goddess, so that she may visit
and bless the house with good
fortune.
9Th Day of Dashian
The ninth day of dashain is called Mahanavami, "the
great ninth day". This is the last day of Navaratri.
Ceremonies and rituals reach the peak on this day.
Animals mostly black buffaloes are slaughtered to
honor Durga the goddess of victory and might and to
seek her blessing. Military bands play war tunes, guns
boom and officers with beautifully decorated medals
in full uniform stand there.
9Th Day of Dashian
On this very day the god Vishwa Karma, the God of
creativity is also worshiped. All factories, vehicles, any
machinery instruments and anything from which we
make a living are worshiped.
We also give sacrifices to all moving machinery like
cars, aeroplanes, trucks etc. to get the blessing from
goddess Durga for protection for vehicles and their
occupants against accidents during the year. The entire
day is colourful.
9Th Day of Dashian
The Taleju Temple gates are
opened to the general
public on only this day of
the year. Thousands of
devotees go and pay respect
to the goddess this day. The
temple is filled with
devotees all day long.
10th Day Of Dashain
The tenth day of the festival is the 'Bijayadashmi'. On
this day, a mixture of rice, yogurt and vermilion is
prepared. This preparation is known as "tika".

My Father, Mother, Grand-mother, Grand-Father and

Great Grand mother put this tika and jamara which is
sown in the Ghatasthapana on my forehead to bless
me.
10th Day Of Dashain
The red in Tika also symbolizes the blood that ties the
family together. Elders give "Dakshina", or a small
amount of money, to younger relatives at this time
along with the blessings.
This ritual of taking tika from all the elder relatives
(even the distant relatives) helps in the renewal of the
community ties greatly. This is one reason why the
festival is celebrated.
10th Day Of Dashain
Dasain also lies in the
fact that on this day
family members from
far off and distant
relatives come for a visit
as well as to receive tika
from the head of the
family. This function
continues for four days.
