Chain Rule

The document discusses different types of proportional relationships related to work. It defines direct and indirect proportion. It provides examples of how the number of workers, amount of work, and time taken are directly or inversely proportional. It also presents different types of concepts and formulas to calculate time required based on the number of workers, men vs boys, etc. Finally, it includes some practice questions related to ratios and proportions involving work.

CHAIN RULE

Direct Proportion:
Two quantities are said to be directly
proportional, if on the increase (or
decrease) of the one, the other increases
(or decreases) to the same extent.

E.g. Cost is directly proportional to the

number of articles.
(More Articles, More Cost)

Indirect Proportion:
Two quantities are said to be indirectly
proportional, if on the increase of the
one, the other decreases to the same
extent and vice-versa.

Eg. The time taken by a car is covering a

certain distance is inversely proportional
to the speed of the car. (More speed,
Less is the time taken to cover a
distance.)

Work from Days:
If A can do a piece of work in n
days, then A’s one day work is=1/n

No. of days = total work / work done

in 1 day

Days from Work: If A’s 1 day’s

work =1/n then

A can finish the work in n days.

TYPE3. If A and B can together complete a

job in x days.
If A alone does the work and takes a days
more than A and B working together.
If B alone does the work and takes b days

Example 1: 12 examiners work 16 hours a day to check 24000
answer sheets in 18 days. Now, 24 examiners would check
how many answer sheets working 6 hours a day in 36 days?

Answer & Explanation

M1=12,T1=16,D1=18 ;W1=24000
M2=24,D2=36,T2=6,W2=?
If there are 24 examiners now and there were 12 earlier, they
will check more answer sheets.
If they work for lesser hours per day, they will check lesser
answer sheets.
MI X T1 X D1/W1 = M2 X T2 X D2 /W2
24000 × (24/12) × (6/16) × (36/18) = 36000.

can together do the same work in
