Qualitativeresearch (Characteristics, Strengthsand Weakn Esses, Qual I T at I Ve Resear CH Design, Sampling, Datacollection& Anal Ysi S)

This document discusses qualitative research methods, including characteristics, strengths, weaknesses, and different design approaches. It provides an overview of phenomenology, case study design, ethnography, and field research. Phenomenology focuses on lived experiences through interviews or writings. Case study design allows an in-depth examination of an individual or group. Ethnography studies entire cultures through participant observation. Field research involves taking field notes in natural settings. Overall, the document outlines key aspects of qualitative research methodology.

Practical Research 1
OBJECTIVES:

 Discuss the characteristics, strengths, weaknesses,

and kinds of qualitative research;

 Explain the importance of qualitative research across fields; and

 Create a reflection about the characteristics of research and how it can

help in promoting social justice, care for the environment,inter-dialogue
and peace in Mindanao.
HOMEWORK

“ What is a qualitative research?

 Research studies that investigate the quality of relationships, activities,

situations, or materials. (Fraenkel, 2007)

 Described by its aims, methodology, and the kind of data collectedto

understand the different facets of sociallife.

 To make sense of and interpret phenomena in terms of the meaningpeople

bring to them (Denzin &Lincoln, 2011, p. 3 cited in Creswell, 2013, p.44)

 Develop an in-depth explanation of aphenomenon.

Weaknesses of qualitative research

✘ data gathering is often time consuming.

✘ analysis of data takes longer time than that in
quantitative analysis
✘ interpretation of results is usuallybiased
✘ conclusions are not generalizable

Case Study Design
Phenomenology

This design focuses on obtaining descriptions of the

subjects’ or respondents’ lived experiences either in
writing or through interviews. The goal of this study
is to analyze the meaning behind these experiences
for each subject, rather than generalizing to a greater
population, (Donalek, 2004 in Practical Research by
Cristobal, 2017).

approach to qualitative methodology

-a comprehensive, in-depth examination of a specific

individual, group of people, orinstitution

-used to gain insights into an obscure orspecific problem; provide
