• Represent the original style of Nagara
• Temple activities in Orissa from 7th to 13th centuries A.D.
• Divided into two groups
– Early form of Nagara temples
– later
• Three places where temples were built; all existed in
District Puri
– Bhuvaneshwar
– Konark
– Puri
– Bhuvaneshwar- main centre of Orissan temple
architecture
• Orissan Temple:- composed of
two main buildings;
– The shrine proper—Rekha
Deul(sanctum with curvilinear
spire)
– Main hall i.e. Mandapa—
Pidha Deul/ Jagamohan/
Bhadra (With
pyramidal roof of tiers)
• Both buildings are similar up to
cornice but difference lies mainly
in the shape and form of Sikhara
• Sikhara of Rekha Deul has a
straight edge gradually inclining
inwards and demarcated into a
number of storey by means of
Bhumi amala(ribbed elements) at
the corners

Lingaraj Temple;- Greatest Creation of Indian Architecture
Constructed in late 11th century A.D.
Grandest and Loftiest
Culmination of the architectural activities at Bhuvaneshwar
Height- more than 148 ft.
Consists of 1. Sanctum i.e. Rekh Deul
2. Mandapa i.e. Pidha Deul
3. Natya Mandapa i.e. Dancing hall
4. Bhog Mandapa i.e. hall of offering
Sanctum- Pancharatha plan
Jagamohan- Pancharatha plan
Sanctum- High Sikhara- Great Height/ Ten storeys/ massive
amla supported by Dopichchha lions at corners
and four armed seated figures at the middle of
the sides
Jagamohan- Sikhara----height- 93 ft
- Pyramidal Tiers- piled in two groups/ crowning
element in the form of enormous bell
Sanctum-
High Sikhara- Great
Height/ Ten storeys/
massive amla supported
by Dopichchha lions at
corners and four armed
seated figures at the
middle of the sides

Jagamohan-
Sikhara---- height- 93 ft
- Pyramidal Tiers- piled
