Abstract
The focus of the detailed study of this electric loco shed is to understand the working of the
organization as well as to understand the functioning of the engine and various parts used to
achieve the traction.
The Electric Loco Shed is a South Central Railway shed on southern Railway territory!
This Shed was set up in 1988 by Railway Electrification Organization and comes under
the TRS section of Indian Railways.
The Project deals with E-M section in Loco-Shed .E-M section is in charge with Traction
motors, Auxiliary motors, Compressors and Relays.
The loco is fitted with six Hitachi designed DC series traction motors types HS15250A,
controlled by a tap changer are used in this Locomotive.
Introduction
WAG-7 is the name of a of electric locomotive used in India.
The first known electric locomotive was built in 1837 by chemist Robert Davidson of Aberdeen. It
was powered by galvanic cells ('batteries').
In this we study about the power line for WAG-7 and Static Inverter of single phase to 3 phase power
supply from main transformer to induction motors.
The transformer steps down the voltage from 25KV to 2 x 865 volts. It is then converted to DC
through two bridge connected silicon rectifiers and is fed to traction motors.
Speed regulation is obtained by varying the voltage at motor terminals by tap changer. Traction
motors are permanently connected in Parallel combination.
The auxiliary machines are fed from Arno converter, which converts the incoming A.C single-phase
supply to three-phase supply at 415 V.

1. Traction motor is a six pole series wound motor in which field widing
is connected in series with armature.

high.

for starting a train.
• There by we would conclude that these electric locomotives have high efficiency when
compared with the other types of locomotives.
• Each of the locomotives has the capacity of carrying at least 60 bogies of load
throughout the lane.
• These locomotives can be further used even with AC motors on which at present our
passenger (WAP-7) & goods (WAG-9) trains are working.
• At present we are using the static inverters in electric locomotives to over the
disadvantages of Arno.
