The Purpose of Caption

To provide the reader basic information needed to

understand a photograph and its relevance to the
news.
It should be written in a consistent, concise format that
allows news organization to move the photo to
publication without delay. When someone looks at a
picture, they’ll look at the caption for the specifics
(name, place, context), but every caption should also
intrigue in a way that makes them look back at the
picture because they just learned something they
didn’t know before they read the caption. If the picture
and caption work well together, they’ll look at the
headline and then the story.

Tips to write a caption:
 Do not begin with the words a, an or the.
 Use present tense to describe action in a photo.
 Give readers information they cannot get from just
looking at a photo.
 A caption should complete the photo. The reader should
not have to look at the story, but should want to look at the
story
 Write captions so they go from specific to general or general
to specific.
 Do not begin a caption with names.
 When identifying members of a group, write “from left,” not
“from left to right.”
 “Above” and “pictured here” are unnecessary.
 Captions should not repeat information contained in the lead.
Tips to write a caption:

picture.

more words forming a grammatical
constituent of a sentence.

 Noun Phrase (a phrase that can function as

the subject or object of a verb)
Grammar Focus

• Participle clauses (Present and Past Participle)

• Participle clauses are shortened dependent
clauses that use a present participle or past
participle. By using participle clauses we can
include a lot of information in a sentence
without making it too long or complicated.
• In Present participle (-ing form) we show that
both actions are taking place at the same
time.
Grammar Focus

• Present participle (-ing form) shows that both actions

are taking place at the same time.
E.g.: Holding the hair-dryer in her left hand, Susan cut her
hair with the scissors in her right hand.
Long form: Susan was holding the hair-dryer in her left
hand and cutting her hair with the scissors in her right
hand
• Past Participle can be used to shorten a passive voice.
e.g.: Blown to the right by the hair-dryer, her hair could
easily be cut.
• Long form: Her hair was blown to the right by the hair-
dryer, so that her hair could be easily cut.
