A PRESENTATION
What is Rational Function?
• A rational function is a function that is a
fraction and has the property that both its
numerator and denominator are polynomials.
In other words, R(x) is a rational function
if R(x) = p(x) / q(x) where p(x) and q(x) are both
polynomials.
KEY CONCEPTS
• VERTICAL ASYMPTOTES
𝑃(𝑥)
- the rational function f(x) = has a
𝑄(𝑥)
point of discontinuity for each real zero of
Q(x)
KEY CONCEPTS
• VERTICAL ASYMPTOTES
- if P(x) and Q(x) have no common real
zeros, then the graph of f(x) vertical
asymptote at each real zero of Q(x).
KEY CONCEPTS
• VERTICAL ASYMPTOTES
- if P(x) and Q(x) have a common real
zero a, then there is a hole in the graph or a
vertical asymptote at x = a.
KEY CONCEPTS
• HORIZONTAL ASYMPTOTES
- the graph of a rational function has at
most one horizontal asymptote.
KEY CONCEPTS
• HORIZONTAL ASYMPTOTES
- the graph of a rational function has a
horizontal asymptote at y = 0 if the degree
of the denominator is greater than the
degree of the numerator.
KEY CONCEPTS
• HORIZONTAL ASYMPTOTES
- if the degrees of the numerator and the
denominator are equal, then the graph has a
𝒂
horizontal asymptote at y = 𝒃
where 𝛼 is
the coefficient of the term of the highest degree
in the numerator and b is the coefficient of the
term of the highest degree in the denominator.
KEY CONCEPTS
• HORIZONTAL ASYMPTOTES
- if the degree of the numerator is great
er than the degree of the denominator, then
the graph has no horizontal asymptote.
