DRAMA

Drama originated from the Greek word meaning "to do" or "act." The earliest forms of drama were tragedy and comedy in ancient Athens. Tragedy featured noble heroes who suffered tragic ends while comedy ranged from bawdy to social commentary. During the Middle Ages, religious dramas like mystery and morality plays were performed. Drama was then liberated from religion during the Renaissance and new forms like Shakespearean tragedy and comedy emerged. Other drama genres include farce, melodrama, and social problem plays which explore societal issues.

Drama
 The word drama comes from the
Greek word "dran" which means "to
do" or "to act," — doing and acting
have always been drama's major
characteristics.
 A person who writes plays is a
playwright or a dramatist.
Playwright is a combination of
"play" and "wright" (worker or
builder).
Types of Drama
 Tragedy began during the 6th century B.C. in ancient 
Athens. It began with a small number of choral 
members impersonating heroes and other important 
figures. The heroes were noteworthy for their 
achievements, but they were mortals and suffered 
death. They also experienced grief and sorrow.
 Then, ancient Athens developed comedy. Since 
there was great freedom of speech, the comedy writers 
created a boisterous, lewd, and freely critical type of 
comedy called the Old Comedy. When freedom of 
speech declined in the 4th century B.C., the Old 
Comedy was replaced by "Middle Comedy, "a more 
social, discreet, and international drama. This was 
then followed by New Comedy or Comedy of Manners, a 
play which features the development of plot, situation, 
and character. This type of comedy dramatizes the 
regeneration of individuals, beginning in doubt and 
ending in success.
Types of Drama
 After the breakup of the Roman Empire in the west at 5th 
century A.D., drama was all but forgotten. When it 
reemerged in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, it came as 
short dramatizations during Easter and Christmas masses. 
By the end of the 13th century, plays had become too long 
and complex to be performed as part of religious services. 
Drama was then performed outdoors during spring or early 
summer as post­Easter celebrations, particularly Corpus 
Christi Day. These dramatizations were called  Mystery Plays 
or Corpus Christi Plays. They were collections of plays 
dramatizing Biblical stories. Later, the  Morality Play was 
developed. Its objective was to show how to live a Christian 
life.

 By the sixteenth century, drama became liberated from 
this religious foundation and began presenting the twists 
and turns of human conflicts. The culture of drama of 
ancient Greece and Rome was revived. An entirely new 
drama was born. The tragedy and comedy which originated 
in Greece enjoyed a new birth during the Renaissance in 
Europe. These are shown in Shakespearean plays.

Other Types of Drama Flowing from
Tragedy and Comedy
 Farce is a drama which intends to make the audience
laugh. It is full of slapstick and extravagant dialogue,
with exaggerated emotions and actions.
 Melodrama brings characters to the brink of ruin, only
to be saved by the hero, who always arrives just in time
— .and with superhuman resources and strength pays
the mortgage, saves the business, and rescues the
heroines while the villain flees.
 Social drama is sometimes called problem drama. This
type of play which evolves in the nineteenth century
explores social problems and the individual's place in
society. The plays can be tragic, comic, or mixed.
