The key points are: 1) AIS automatically identifies and tracks vessels to enable better visibility and collision avoidance. 2) International regulations require AIS Class A equipment on vessels over 300 tons and all passenger ships. 3) AIS works by exchanging data between ships and coastal stations via VHF radio and GPS, providing information like position, speed, and vessel details. 4) The system provides improved navigation safety, especially at night or in poor conditions, within ranges of 15-40 nautical miles depending

DEPARTMENT OF MARINE ENGINEERING

TECHNICAL SEMINAR ON

AUTOMATIC
IDENTIFICATION SYSTEM
Why is AIS provided?
It enables vessels to see each other more clearly in all
conditions

Collision avoidance system

Aid to navigation

Aids to Search and rescue

Aid to maritime security

INTRODUCTION
Automatic tracking system used on ships and by vessel traffic
services (VTS).
Identifies and locates the vessel

If AIS is not fitted or not switched on, there is no exchange of

information on ships via AIS.

 The AIS onboard must be switched on at all times unless the

Master deems that it must be turned off for security reasons
or anything else.
Legal requirements :

The IMO requires AIS class A equipment

to be fitted on-board

All vessels over 300 tons

All passenger ships irrespective of size

Class B :
See and be seen

Transmits your position to

AIS equipped vessels automatically

Displays info. From all class A and B equipped vessels around

you

Additional safety at night / in poor visiblity

Reciever :
AIS receiver picks up information on Class A and Class B fitted
vessels but Does not transmit their own position
Working :
 Needs a AIS transceiver and transponder

 Uses a VHF radio frequency and GPS receiver

 Electronically exchanges data with other craft and AIS base

stations
What Does AIS tell us ?
 Information on craft
In the area
 Position

 Speed

 Course

 Contact info : Name,

Callsign,MMSI
Range :
• Class A units : ( Transmission power – 12W )
Approx. Range = 15.20 nautical miles

• Class B units : ( Transmission power restricted to – 2W )

Approx. Range = 5.10 nautical miles

• AIS base stations :

Approx. Range = up to 40 nautical miles
AIS Symbols Key :
Advanteges Of AIS :
The system is fully automated with absolutely no human
intervention.

Unlike Radar, It is not affected by rains or Sea.

• Its propagation is better than that of radar, due to the longer

wavelength.

It’s possible to “see” around bends and behind islands if the

land masses are not too high.

Additional safety at night time.

Limitations of AIS :
• The system coverage range is similar to other VHF digital
applications which depends upon the height of the antenna.
Typical Range 20 NM

• Some vessels like fishing vessels leisure craft and vessels

below 300 GRT may not be fitted with AIS.

• The OOW should always be aware that AIS fitted on other

ships under certain circumstances, can be switched off on the
master’s professional judgment.
