The document discusses finned tube heat exchangers. Finned tube heat exchangers have tubes with extended outer surface area or fins to enhance heat transfer rates. The fins increase the effective heat transfer area between the tubes and surrounding fluid. Finned tube heat exchangers are commonly used when the heating or cooling medium is air due to air's low thermal conductivity. They are used in industries like natural gas liquefaction and ammonia production. Finned tube heat exchangers have higher efficiency than other types but also higher costs due to their intricate construction.

Contents • What are Heat Exchangers? • Finned tube Heat Exchanger • Types of Fins • Construction and Design • Applications • Advantages and Disadvantages What are Heat Exchangers? • A heat exchanger is a device used to effect the process of heat exchange between two fluids that are at different temperatures. • In many heat exchangers, heat transfer between fluids take place trough a separating wall or into and out of a wall in a transient manner. Finned Tube Heat Exchanger • Finned tube heat exchangers have tubes with extended outer surface area or fins to enhance the heat transfer rate from the additional area of fins. • Finned tubes or tubes with extended outer surface area enhance the heat transfer rate by increasing the effective heat transfer area between the tubes and surrounding fluid. • The fluid surrounding finned tubes maybe process fluid or air. Types of Fins Longitudinal Transverse Construction and Design • The finned tubes are designed in such a way that the heat exchanging area is maximized so as to allow the transfer of heat for cooling or heating of process fluid depending upon the application of process fluid. • Also they are constructed form metals with high thermal conductivities so as to maximize the heat transfer. Applications • Primary application of the finned tube heat exchangers are in applications where the heating or cooling medium is air. Since air has a very low thermal conductivity, heat exchangers with high rate of heat transfer are used. • They are generally used in the following industries: • Natural gas liquefaction • Cryogenic air separation • Ammonia production • Offshore processing • Syngas production Advantages and Disadvantages Advantages: • Higher efficiency compared to other type of heat exchangers. • Higher cost are often outweighed by the efficiency of the heat exchanger.
Disadvantages: • Higher cost due to intricate construction. • Mechanical cleaning is difficult and fouling may occur during the process of heat exchange.
