MATH 5-Lesson 31-Q2-Week 1.

Rounding Decimal Numbers to the Nearest Hundredths

and Thousandths.
K to 12 Grade 5 Curriculum (MN5S-IIa-1012.3) p.57,
Lesson Guide in Mathematics
DRILL:
a) Call 18 volunteer pupils and group them into 3.
b) Provide each group with number cards from 0 to 5 and a decimal
point.
0 . 1 2 3 4 5
c) Each group will form the number given by the teacher to answer the
given problem.
I am a 5-digit number. My tenths is twice my hundredths digit,
and my one’s digit is the sum of my tenths and ten
thousandths digit. My thousandths digit is a place value
holder. (5.4201)
d. The first group to form the number correctly wins the game.
* Valuing: Who do you think will offer the first handshake after the game?
Why? If you were the winner/loser in a game, what will you do?
Review: Relay Game
Mechanics:
a. The teacher dictate the decimal number.
b. The first pupil in a row will write his answer on a piece of
paper as a group’s answer sheet.
c. He pass it to his teammate next to him for his answer to the
number dictate by the teacher.
d. As soon as the last pupil in a row has written his answer he
submits their answer sheet to the teacher for checking.
e. The group with the most number of correct answers win.
MOTIVATION:

What percent is the molecules of carbon dioxide

present in the earth’s atmosphere?
Presentation:
Present the problem in the class.

“Of the 100% total molecules present in the total

molecules present composition of the Earth’s atmosphere,
only 0.0325 percent is carbon dioxide.’

Ask: What number is closest to 0.0325? Why? Why not?

What are the other possible numbers closest to 0.325?
What are the rules in rounding off decimal numbers ?
Performing the Activity:
A. Encourage the pupils to work in pairs. Give them time to solve for the answer to the
problem by illustration.
Solution 1: By using the number line.

0.320 0.321 0.322 0.323 0.324 0.325 0.326 0.327 0.328 0.329 0.330

From the diagram, it is easy to see that 0.325 is closest to 0.330, cancel
the last digit 0, So, 0.325 rounded to nearest hundredths is 0.33.
It means it rounds up.
Performing the Activity:
Solution 2 By following the rules in rounding off decimal.
Round to the nearest hundredths.

Step 1 Look for the digit to be rounded.

0.325 Find out what digit on its right. If it

is 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9, round it up, add 1
1 Step 2 to the rounded digit. If 0, 1, 2, 3, or
4, round it down, retain the
rounded digit.

0.3 3 Step 3
Cancel the digit/s on its right, copy
the digit/s on its left.

So, 0.325 rounded to nearest hundredths is 0.33.

It means it rounds up.
Performing the Activity:
B. Have the pupils play by pair. The pair that gets the most number of correct answers
wins.

1. Flash cards one at a time. Let the pupils round to nearest hundredths.

6.540 7.346 0.3892 0.0452 75.3460

2. Flash the cards one at a time. Let the pupils round to the nearest
thousandths.

6.34571 22.78649 12.40935 6.1469 32.3487

Processing the Activities:
After the group have played, ask,”
•How do you find the activity?
•How did you round decimal number nearest to hundredths
and thousandths?”

Expected answer:
By using number line
By following the rules in rounding off numbers.
Reinforcing the Concept and Skills:
A….Explore and Discovery:
James climb a 483 meter hill. If there are 1000 meters in
1 kilometer, what part of the hill and did Luis climb? Round to the
nearest hundredths.
To know the part of the hill Luis climb.
1. Change meter to kilometre. (1000 m=1 km)
483
0.483
1000

0.480 0.481 0.482 0.483 0.484 0.485 0.486 0.487 0.488 0.489 0.490

From the diagram, it is easy to see that 0.483 is closest to 0.480 than 490.
So ,483 is rounded to 0.480 or 0.48.
Now, let us try to round .483 to the nearest hundredths.
Study the illustration below.

Rounding digit

0.483
The digit to the right is smaller
than 5, so it rounds down.

Retain or do not add 1 to rounding digit

8, cancel digit 3.

So, 0.483 rounded to the nearest hundredths is 0.48

A. Complete the table.
