Definitions of Multicultural Literature

•A literature is all about the social cultural experiences of


under represented groups. Includes those who fall outside
the “mainstream” of categories such as race, ethnicity,
religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, and
language.
Advantages of Multicultural Literature
• Reading multicultural realistic fiction can increase

student engagement in literacy activities (Tyson 1999)

• Multicultural literature is a catalyst for improve reading

achievement among students who are culturally and


linguistically diverse (Callins, 2006)
• Children’s books have the potential to support diversity
in the curriculum and raise consciousness on cultural
issues that have been historically ignored
• Excellent opportunity to integrate social studies and
language arts
• Multicultural literature can help create classroom where
all students are valued.
Choosing Quality Multicultural Literature
• Accuracy
- Are the portrayals accurate?
- Are they up-to-date?
- Are you sure?
• Portrayal of Characters
- Unique, not stereotypes, enriched and guided by their
cultural backgrounds
• Language
- Free of demeaning, offensive words and
images. Character language fit the place,
social situation
• Perspective
- is a cultural diversity an asset? Are characters
viewed as part of target
culture or as outsiders? Is it clear you don’t
have to give up nonmainstream culture to be
successful?
Choosing Multicultural Literature
• Illustrations
- are images culturally accurate? Are there variety of
physical features? Are cultural aspects specific, not
just generic?
• Over all effect
- does the book contribute to self esteem of members
of the culture portrayed? Can others learn from it?
Does it allow multiple perspective and avoid
preaching?
The Values of Multicultural Literature

Promotes Empathy and Unity


-Multicultural literature fosters positive self-esteem
and prevents students from feeling isolated.

Promotes cross-cultural friendship


- Promotes the interaction of children across
different ethnic backgrounds.

Helps students look critically at the world
-It helps the students develop global awareness by
introducing them to current cultural issues.

Encourages identity formation


-It is important in he social development of all children, as it
gives them a sense of belonging and acceptance in society.
