What To Do Before, During and After A Volcanic Eruption
Volcanic eruptions occur when lava and gas are discharged from a volcanic vent, often forcing large population movements. There are warning signs before an eruption like rumbling and increased heat that allow time to prepare. Preparations include making an evacuation plan, gathering supplies, and signing up for alert notifications. During an eruption, remain calm and indoors, covering nose and mouth if outside to avoid ash. Afterward, listen to updates, clean ash off roofs to prevent collapse, and seek medical help if experiencing breathing issues from ash inhalation.

What Are The Things To Do
Before, During and After a
Volcanic Eruption WHAT IS A VOLCANIC ERUPTION
Volcanic eruptions happen when lava and
gas are discharged from a volcanic vent. The most common consequences of this are population movements as large numbers of people are often forced to flee the moving lava flow. Volcanic eruptions often cause temporary food shortages and volcanic ash landslides called Lahar. BEFORE A VOLCANIC ERUPTION
Volcanic eruptions happen with early warnings unlike
earthquakes that are sudden. There are early warning signs before a volcano erupts so there is at least time for residents around the volcano to prepare before the actual eruption occurs. People should know that before a volcano erupts there are warning signs such as rumbling sounds, continues emission of steam, increasing temperature around the volcano that results to withering of plans around and unusual behaviors of animals and earthquakes. Here are the things we need to do before a volcanic eruption. THINGS TO DO BEFORE A VOLCANIC ERUPTION: Prepare Know your area’s risk from volcanic eruption. Ask local emergency management for evacuation and shelter plans, and for potential means of protection from ash. Learn about community warning systems by signing up for a free service called the Volcano Notification Service (VNS) that sends notifications about volcanic activity. Get necessary supplies in advance in case you have to evacuate immediately, or if services are cut off. Keep in mind each person’s specific needs, including medication. Do not forget the needs of pets. Consult your doctor if you have existing respiratory difficulties. Practice a communication and evacuation plan with everyone in your family. Have a shelter-in-place plan if your biggest risk is from ash. Keep important documents in a safe place. Create password-protected digital copies. DURING A VOLCANIC ERUPTION
During a volcanic eruption there are many
things happening in our surrounding that’s why we must not panic. There are many things to be scared of and things we must remember like our family relatives and friends. We must pray and stay strong. We must also be mentally prepared for any thing that is going to happen. THINGS TO DO DURING A VOLCANIC ERUPTION: Stay calm. Cover your nose and mouth with mask or clean cloth. If you are outside, immediately seek cover in case of ash or rock falls. Wear glasses to protect your eyes and avoid all low-lying places. If you are inside a house, listen to the radio for updates and developments regarding the volcanic eruption. Close all windows and doors of the house and your car to prevent ashes from getting inside. If you are driving a vehicle, pull to the side of the road and stop if there is a heavy ashfall. As soon as the ashfall tapers, scrape off the ash that has accummulated on roof tops to prevent collapse. Stay in the evacuation center until further instructions. Do not attempt to leave the place unless told to do. Thoroughly wash utensils before eating. Cover water containers and food to avoid contamination with ash. AFTER A VOLCANIC ERUPTION
After an eruption, roofs on buildings
may collapse and kill people if enough volcanic ash particles land on them. People can develop breathing problems, throat irritation and other respiratory issues when ash falls after a volcanic eruption. THINGS TO DO AFTER A VOLCANIC ERUPTION: Listen to your local radio stations for civil defence advice and follow instructions. Stay indoors and away from volcanic ashfall areas as much as possible. When it is safe to go outside, keep your gutters and roof clear of ash as heavy ash deposits can collapse your roof. If there is a lot of ash in the water supply, do not use your dishwasher or washing machine. Avoid driving in heavy ashfall as it stirs up ash that can clog engines and cause serious abrasion damage to your vehicle. Keep animals indoors where possible, wash away ash on their paws or skin to keep them from ingesting the ash, and provide clean drinking water. Use a mask or a damp cloth and eye protection when cleaning up. Moisten the ash with a sprinkler before cleaning. Look for and report broken utility lines to appropriate authorities. If your property is damaged, take notes and photographs for insurance purposes. If you rent your property, contact your landlord and your contents insurance company as soon as possible.
