Components of PC

A computer consists of hardware and software components. The main hardware components are the central processing unit (CPU), memory, input devices, output devices, and mass storage devices. The CPU executes instructions, memory stores data and programs, input devices such as keyboards allow data entry, output devices such as monitors display the results, and mass storage devices like hard disks permanently store large amounts of data. A computer receives input, processes the data, produces output, and stores information.

Components of PC

Main Characteristics of a computer

 It responds to a specific set of

instructions in a well-defined manner
 It can execute a pre-recorded list of
instructions (a program)

Hardware Components
 Central Processing Unit (CPU): The ‘brain’ of the
computer, the component that actually executes
instructions
 Memory : It enables a computer to store, at least
temporarily, data and programs
 Input device : Usually a keyboard or mouse is
used to read data and programs into the computer
 Output device: A display screen, printer, etc. that
lets you see what the computer has accomplished
 Mass storage device: It allows a computer to
permanently store large amounts of data.
Common mass storage devices include disk drive
and tape drive
Functions and Components of a Computer
 Receive input —Accept data/information
from outside through various input devices
like the keyboard, mouse, scanner
 Process information—Perform arithmetic or
logical operations on data/information
 Produce output—Communicate information
to the outside world through output devices
like monitor, printer
 Store information—Store the information in
storage devices like hard disk, floppy disks,
CD
Input Devices
Keyboard MICR

Mouse OCR

Monitors
 Based on Signals
◦ Digital
 Digital signals are translated to analog
 Fast and produce clear images
 Cannot display variable colors simultaneously
◦ Analog
 CRT technology
