On MR FLUID

This document provides an overview of magnetorheological (MR) fluids. MR fluids are liquids that change viscosity when exposed to a magnetic field, allowing their flow properties to be controlled. The document discusses how MR fluids are made using iron particles suspended in a carrier liquid. It also outlines some common applications of MR fluids, such as in vehicle suspension systems, brakes, clutches, and vibration dampers, where their viscosity change properties allow controllable damping. The document notes that research is ongoing to develop new types of MR fluids and expand their applications further.

• Viscosity controlled by the application of a Magnetic Field.
• Viscosity directionally proportional to the strength of Magnetic
field.

• Viscosity change is achieved in a fraction of a millisecond.

• Viscosity can be altered several times with fluid properties
unaltered.
• Variety of applications.
• Numerous Advantages
MAGNETO RHEOLOGY

• MAGNETOrheological FLUID= Fluid, whose apparent viscosity

increases, with application of MAGNETIC field.

• RHEOS (Greek word) = to FLOW (English word)

• RheoLOGY= Science of material flow under external load

Conditions

Liquids that harden or change shape when they feel a magnetic

field
MAGNETO-RHEOLOGIC FLUIDS

• A rheologic fluid changes properties as an

external field is applied.
• These fluids can be used as controllable
energy dissipaters.
• The control used is semi-active, and with this
approach small control energy can produce
large actuation forces.
MR fluids offer higher order yield stresses and
provide a better operating temperature range.
MORE INFO

• Tiny Iron Particles align with Magnetic Field.

• Fluid turns pasty and feels very stiff.
• Reverts to liquid when Magnetic Field is removed.
• The weight and space required by the coils to produce
magnetic field is a setback.
HOW DO THEY WORK ?
• Externally applied magnetic field in a direction
normal to the fluid flow direction form dipoles in
the iron particles
• Magnetic poles start attracting each others to
the direction of the field, hence forming chains
• The chains then form a skeleton
within the fluid, which gains the
fluid controllable yield stress
• The alignment of the
articles in the fluid will
also cause the
Viscosity of the fluid to
increase, making the
fluid seem “thicker.”

APPLICATIONS

• Vibration Control
• Active Damping Controls
• Brakes
• Clutches
• Stabilizing Leg Brace
• Regulating Flow
• Exercise Equipment
• Other Applications
APPLICATION IN MILITARY AND
DEFENSE
APPLICATION IN AUTOMOBILES
• Vehicle Suspension Dampers

The piston of the MR damper acts as

an electromagnet with the required
number of coils to produce the
appropriate magnetic field.
APPLICATION IN AUTOMOBILE
• MR Transmission Clutches • The MR sponge clutch may be
used to provide launch control of
an automobile thereby achieving
smooth vehicle launch.

• The MRF clutch thus may

replace the existing torque
converters and therefore help
increase the fuel economy.
APPLICATION IN AUTOMOBILE
• MR Brakes
• The MR-brake uses two concentric
cylinders. The inner cylinder (the
drum) rotates inside the outer
cylinder (the spool).

• The gap between the drum and the

spool is filled with the MR fluid that
applies a controllable braking torque
on the drum due to the change in its
viscosity as a function of the strength
of the applied magnetic field.

• The coil was wound on the spool and

placed underneath the shell.
OTHER APPLICATIONS

Optics Seismic dampers

FUTURE WORK

Exoskeleton incorporating MR fluids

RECENT ADVANCES
• Newer studies have focused on dimorphic magneto
rheological fluids, which are conventional sphere-based
fluids in which a fraction of the spheres, typically 2 to 8
weight%, are replaced with nanowires.

• General Motors and other automotive companies are

seeking to develop a magnetorheological fluid based clutch
system for push-button four wheel drive systems.

• Magnetorheological dampers for use in military and

commercial helicopter cockpit seats, as safety devices in
the event of a crash, are under development.

• Porsche has introduced magnetorheological engine mounts

in the 2013 Porsche GT3 and GT2.
