This document summarizes a simulation study investigating temperature distribution along the length of pin fins. Solidworks was used to model aluminum, copper, and stainless steel pin fins, which were then simulated in ANSYS to analyze temperature variations under natural and forced convection. The study found that perforated pin fins had higher temperature drops along their length than solid fins. Perforated fins with perpendicular holes and axial holes every other length had the highest heat transfer rates and coefficients. The simulation provides insight into optimizing pin fin design for applications requiring maximum heat transfer.

Simulation to run a thermal study investigating temperature distribution
along the length of the pin fin.

 The purposes of this study are to determine pin fin effectiveness and
convective heat transfer coefficients for free and forced convection
over pin fins of differing length and material.
 Pin Fins are the extended surface protruding from a surface or body
and they are meant for increasing the heat transfer rate between the
surface and the surrounding fluid by increasing heat transfer area.
 Fins are the surfaces that extend from an object to increase the rate of heat transfer
to or from the environment by increasing convection.
 Temperature distributions for three different pin fins are measured under natural
and forced convection boundary conditions.
 Empirical correlations relate the heat transfer coefficient of a cylinder (pin fin) in
cross flow with the Prandtl number and Rayleigh number for natural convection.
 Main factors to consider in the design of pin fin include a large heat transfer rate,
low-pressure drop, and a simpler structure.
 The temperature distributions of three different pin fins were measured under
natural and forced convection conditions. The convective heat transfer coefficients
were calculated by average temperature method and empirical correlations.
Radiation heat transfer is not negligible for the stainless steel pin fin.
 Furthermore, the stainless steel pin fin can be considered “infinitely long”, and it is
the least effective of all three fins.
 Heat transfer rate increases when thermal conductivity of material increases.
Solid works software

Why Solidworks software is used?

• Solidworks based approach provides good and well-detailed information on
the performance of pin fin. This encouraged and motivated the use of
SOLIDWORKS for this research.
• Solidworks simulations results were obtained and compared to
experimental results. It was concluded that total surface area and fin
spacing significantly affects the performance.
• Solidworks approach provides better and more detailed information and
predicts the performance well.
 Most studies that have demonstrated the beneficial effects of perforations on the
rate of heat transfer in pin fin arrays have used only a single perforation per pin.
The logical extremis of this parameter is the metallic foam-like porous pins. Indeed,
numerical simulations, e.g. by Pradeep singh.

 The rectangular shaped extended surfaces shows the high rate of heat transfer
when compared to other extensions at same length.by Kang Hiechan

 Many experiments to find the fin efficiency and concluded that the efficiency of fin
is useful when the value of NTU is zero otherwise the fin efficiency is high when the
NTU is high and is used in air conditioning systems.by Shivdas S Kharche.

 common pin fin heat sink but the temperature decreases in axial direction by
increasing the pin fin length. By Sampath S.
 Above a certain point (number of fins), the net effect of thermal performance
reverses due to total convective surface increase resulting in greater pressure drop
hence fin flow velocity decreases as well.

 To achieve high thermal performance the cylindrical perforated pin fins are used
they leads to high heat transfer than the cylindrical pin fins. M. P. Shah.

 Reduced to the minimum level by using the advanced composite materials like
polyphenylene sulphide (PPS), carbon foam, graphite epoxy at the same thermal
inputs. Zhang, H.S.

ANALYSIS

 ANSYS stands for Analysis System. ANSYS Mechanical is a finite element

analysis tool for structural analysis, including linear, nonlinear and dynamic
studies. This computer simulation product provides finite elements to model
behaviour, and supports material models and equation solvers for a wide
range of mechanical design problems.
 Ansys provide a cost effective way to explore the performance of products or
processes in a virtual environment. This type of product development is
termed virtual prototyping.
 With virtual prototyping techniques, users can iterate various scenarios to
optimize the product long before the manufacturing is started. This enables
reduction in the level of risk, and in the cost of ineffective designs.
MODELING AND SIMULATION:
The model is designed in Solid works and simulation performed in ANSYS 14.5.
Workbench environment with ANSYS system of steady state thermal has the
capability of solving the convective transport of energy and the thermal
conduction in solids. In the any CFD simulation, the steps in performing fluid
analysis are:
 Modeling in Solid works
 Import the geometry in ANSYS steady state thermal
 Generating mesh
 Set up the analysis by providing boundary conditions
 Control and monitor the solver to achieve a solution
 Visualize the results and create a report.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

 After the evaluation of temperature distribution along the

length of the fin, a path can be defined to analyze the variation
in the temperature from source to the free end of the fin.
Hence to define the path, construction geometry is to be
considered
 It is found that the temperature drop along the perforated fins
length is consistently higher than that for the non perforated
fins.
 It is found that the Nusselt number, heat transfer andheat
transfer coefficient is maximum in case of solid with
perpendicular hols and axial hole one by two length fin.
 Perforated fin leads to decreases the expenditure of the fin
material.
CONCLUSION
From the investigation the following conclusion were made:
 It is found that the temperature drop along the perforated fins length is
consistently higher than that for the non perforated fins.
 It is found that the heat transfer rate is more for different perforated fin
compare to plane fin.
 It is also concluded that from various perforated fins Plane solid have
minimum heat transfer rate whereas solid with perpendicular hole and
axial hole of one by two length have highest heat transfer rate.
 It is found that the Nusselt number, heat transfer and heat transfer
coefficient is maximum in case of solid with perpendicular hols and axial
hole one by two length fin.
 Perforated fin leads to decreases the expenditure of the fin material.
