A period of increasing vulnerability and risks.

Types of Adolescents’ Vulnerabilities:

1. Physical
2. Emotional
3. Socio-economic
 Adolescence is a time of rapid growth and
development.
 Adolescents seek ownership of their decisions and
actions.
 Adolescents experience enormous physical and
psychological changes, heightened desire to explore
oneself, experimentation, and changes in social
expectations and perceptions.
 This is also the stage where adolescents often have
poor eating habits.

 Poor health in infancy and childhood, often resulting

from impoverished conditions, can persist into
adolescence and beyond.
 Mental health problems can increase during adolescence
due to the hormonal and other physical changes of
puberty, along with changes in adolescents’ social
environment.
 Adolescents often lack assertiveness and good
communication to withstand pressure or coercion from
their peers or adults.
 Young people are more vulnerable to sexual, physical,
and verbal abuse because they are less able to prevent or
stop such manifestations of power.
 During adolescence, young people’s need for money
often increases, yet they typically have little access to
money or gainful employment.
 Poverty and economic hardships increase health risks
due to poor sanitation, lack of clean water, and inability
to afford health care and medications.
 Young women face gender discrimination that affects
food allocation, access to health care, the ability to
negotiate safer sex, and opportunities for social and
economic well-being.
A period of increasing vulnerability
and risks. As doors open to a wider
world, new kinds of relationships and
new types of challenges, it exposes
them to greater THREATS and more
RISKS than they have ever
encountered.
