Train Protection & Warning System

 TPWS- as per ETCS (European Train Control System)

Functional and System Specifications with SIL-4
standard equipments.
 Main Part of TPWS
 Track Side Equipment :
 Line-side Electronic Unit (LEU)
 Ballise

 On Board Equipment :
 Driver Machine Interface (DMI)
 On Board Computer (OBC)
 Ballise Transmission Module (BTM)
 Wheel sensors
 Antenna
Train Protection & Warning System

 System Works as overlay to existing Signaling.

 Signal Information Captured by LEU (Line side Electronic Unit).
 Movement Authority (distance to stop) is Worked out by LEU & sent to Balise.
 Telegram is stored in Balise and passed to Loco Equipment when loco moves
over Balise.
 Loco Equipment Works out Speed Profile based on telegram received.
 Speed monitored Continuously against Speed Profile- Application of Brakes if
actual speed exceeds permitted speed+ margin.
Train Protection & Warning System

 Signal information is updated at discreet locations.

 Infill Balises to update Movement Authority (MA) timely.
Train Protection & Warning System

As soon as Two

successive balises are
read, FS (Full
Supervision) mode
becomes active.

In this mode DMI

(Driver Machine
Interface) displays
Permitted Speed &
Current Speed.
Train Protection & Warning System
 When the train speed
exceeds beyond MPS
(Max. Permissible
Speed), ‘OVER SPEED’
indication will flash
with visual warning.
 If current speed
exceeds MPS by
5Kmph, Service Brake
(SB) is applied
automatically.
 If current speed
exceeds MPS by
10Kmph, Emergency
Brake (EB) is applied
automatically.
Line Side Electronic Unit (LEU)

 Detects Signal Aspect.

 Based upon signal

aspect, generates
suitable messages
called telegram to the
balise continuously .
Balise
 Transmits Telegrams
from LEU to on-board
equipment of TPWS
while an active driving
cab of loco passes over
it.

 Transmission -27MHz
downlink signal and 4.6
MHz uplink signal.
TPWS Basic System Configuration
Train Protection & Warning System

Safety of Train.
 No dependence on observation of Signal by Driver.
 Signal Information is converted into distance to
stop information (MA) at every balise.
 Update of Speed Profile by On Board Based on MA.
-Continuous Supervision of Speed of train.
 Warning and Monitoring of Permanent Speed
Restrictions.
Higher Speeds can be achieved.
Headway between trains can be reduced.
