Introduction
• This is a thin nerve loop that
lies embedded in the
anterior wall of the carotid
sheath
• It supplies the infrahyoid
muscles
Formation
• It is formed by a superior
and inferior roots
• Superior root (descendens
hypoglossi ) is the
continuation of the
descending branch of the
hypoglossal nerve
• Superior root contains
nerve fibres from the 1st
cervical nerve
Formation
• Inferior root( descendens
cervicalis) contains nerve
fibres from 2nd and 3rd
cervical nerves
Distribution
• Superior root –to superior
belly of omohyoid
• Ansa cervicalis-to the
strenohyoid,the
sternothyroid and the
inferior belly of omohyoid
