Measure of Skewness - Lesson 7

Here are the steps to determine the coefficient of skewness for the data set X = { 88,82,79,92,97,75,84,91,80,85}: 1) Find the mean (X) of the data: X = 86 2) Find the standard deviation (Sd): Sd = √(Σ(X-X)2/n) = √(188.4/10) = 4.35 3) Find the coefficient of skewness (Sk): Sk = 3*(X - Mdn)/(Sd) Mdn = 85 Sk = 3*(86 - 85)/4.35 = 0.69 Since Sk

Measure of Skewness

Measure of central tendency tell us

whether the center of the distribution is and
measure of variability tell us the average
distance from the center of the distribution
while measures of skewness tell how the data
behave in relation to its center
1. Normal Distribution
- is a distribution with a bell shaped appearance.
In a normal distribution, the mean = mdn= mo

3. Positively Skewed
- when the bulk of the distribution is on
the left.
- means that there are low scores than
the high scores.
- majority of the students got low scores.
- the mean is greater than the median.
