Load Calculations On Drilling Rig

The document discusses equations for calculating power input, power output, hoisting efficiency, and velocity for block and drilling line systems. It provides three examples of problems involving these calculations: 1) Calculating required drawworks horsepower given hook load, travelling block velocity, and efficiencies. 2) Calculating maximum hoisting speed for a stand given rig information, depth, hookload, and drawworks limit. 3) Calculating static tension, maximum hook horsepower, and maximum hoisting speed for different numbers of lines, given a load, input power, and efficiency.

Block and drilling line efficiency

Power Input (Pi) = Ff x Vf

Power Output (Po) = Fh x Vtb

Where;
Fh = the hook load in lb.
Vtb = the velocity of the travelling block in fpm.
Ff = the fast line load in lb.
Vf = the velocity of the fast line in fpm.
The relationship between the fast line speed and the travelling block speed:

Vf = n x Vtb
Where;
n = number of lines strung between the travelling block and the crown block

The relationship between the fast line speed and the fast line load:
Vf = Pi ÷ Ff
Where:
Vf = Fast line velocity; Pi = Power Input; Ff = Fast line Load

Hoisting Efficiency:
Example 1: The maximum anticipated hook load is 500,000 lb and the travelling block
velocity is 100 ft/minute. Hoisting efficiency is 85% and the drawworks efficiency is 75%.
Calculate the required horsepower for the drawworks for this situation?

1 horsepower = 33,000 ft-lb/min

Solution Steps:
1. Calculate Po
2. Find Pi with the help of efficiency equation
3. You need input horsepower of the drawworks of
__________ hp.
Example 2: The string will be pulled out from 15,000 ft. The rig information is listed below;

Drilling lines: 12 lines

Hoisting efficiency: 70%

Drawworks: 1,200 hp

Drawworks efficiency: 80%

Expected hookload at 15,000 ft: 350,000 lb

What is the speed at which the first stand (90 ft stand) can be pulled out of hole based on the

drawworks technical limit?

Solution steps:

Ff = ?lb

Power Input (Pi) comes from the drawworks and we

can determine it from the drawworks efficiency

Power output (Po) = ? hp

Vtb = ? fpm
1 horsepower = 33,000 ft-lb/min
The travelling block speed = Stand pipe / Vtb = ?minute.
Power output(Po) =? ft-lb/min

The pulling speed for the first stand is ________ minutes

Fast line velocity (Vf) = ? fpm

Travelling block velocity (fpm):

Vf = n x Vtb
Example 3. A rig must hoist a load of 300,000 lbf. The drawworks can provide an input power to the block and

tackle system as high as 500 hp.

Calculate:

(1) the static tension in the fast line when upward motion is impending,

(2) the maximum hook horsepower available,

(3) the maximum hoisting speed,

Case 1: Six lines are strung between the crown block and traveling block

Case 2: Eight lines are strung between the crown block and traveling block

Case 3: Ten lines are strung between the crown block and traveling block
