Chapter 0 Powerpoint

This document provides an overview of lunar phases, constellations, the universe, seasons, and key astronomy vocabulary terms. It defines lunar phases as the changes in appearance of the moon over the course of a month as different portions are lit. It also lists the main phases of the moon and describes how ancient people connected stars into constellations representing mythological figures and animals. Finally, it explains that the seasons are caused by the tilt of the Earth's axis of rotation.

Lunar Phase definition

Lunar phases are changes by appearance that the moon goes through over the
course of each month. As the moon rotates we get to see different portions over the
lit shapes of the moon
Phases of the Moon

Constellations

Between sunset and sunrise on a clear night we can see 3000 points of light. People
long ago connected the brightest stars into configurations called constellations.
Most constellations were named after mythological heroes and animals. Their are at
least 88 constellations most are visible from North America at a certain time of year.
To find these stars scientist use this method called Celestial coordinates it ranks the
stars in order of their brightness and the stars are attached to this celestial sphere
centered on earth
The Universe & Seasons

The totality of all space, time, matter, and energy

Our universe is composed of many galaxies, stars, and planets that in our solar
system: orbit the sun

The seasons we have are caused by the tilt of earth's rotation axis their are 4
diffrent seasons
Vocabulary
Astronomy- Branch of science dedicated to study of everything in the universe

Celestial sphere - The projection of earth's equator onto the celestial sphere

Celestial coordinate - imaginary sphere surrounding Earth to which all objects in the
sky

Precession- The slow change in the direction of the rotation axis of a spinning object

Triangulation- Method of determining distance based on the principles of geometry

Parallax- Apparent motion of a relatively close object with respect to a more distant
background
Vocabulary cont.

Baseline - The distance between two observing locations used for the purpose of
triangulation measurements

Science- A step by step process for investigating the physical world base on natural
laws and observable phenomena

Scientific method- is a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural

world, based on a body of facts that have been repeatedly confirmed through
observation and experiment
